Reviewed: 2002 BMW X5

4dr SUV 282-horsepower 4.4L V8 5-speed shiftable automatic AWD

Why the 2002 BMW X5?

Exterior styling

Sleek and not truck like looking. Sporty lines with out too many garish add ons. i.e. fake mud guards, extra body panels that do nothing, etc.

Reliability & durability

It appears from others to be a safe and reliable car. If the engine holds up as well as my other I should have it a long time. It has 60,000 mile but looks and drives like new.

Powertrain performance

More than enough power. Maybe too much. The truck/SAV/SUV performs like a sports car. Zero body roll, instant power to the wheels. Quiet but firm ride, that can be a little harsh.

Brand reputation & image

BMW is known for good performance and German engineering is known for quality in general. History of good durability. You can still find many 20+ year old cars on the road.

Why Not the 2002 BMW X5?

Fuel economy

It gets about 16 mpg in town and about 19-20 on the highway. For the amount of performance I should not complain but I would love a SUV that got about 30

Price or payments

New price is enormous. 50,000+ I paid 15,000

Insurance cost

New buyers take huge hit on depreciation. Insurance is about on par with my other vehicles so it really is not a problem.

Dealer practices

I have not yet had any dealership interaction.

Cargo capacity

Space behind the rear seat could be a little larger.
