Toyota RAV4 Real Gas Mileage: Pros

2019	Toyota improved the RAV4 Hybrid's fuel economy dramatically with the redesign. The model's EPA highway rating has surged from 30 to 38 mpg, while its city rating has jumped from 34 to 41 mpg. In suburban driving I easily achieved trip computer averages in the low 40s, with a max of 50. On a 70-mph highway I observed averages from 35 to 38 mpg. While still much less efficient than a Prius, which is lighter and lower, the RAV4 now delivers the fuel economy people expect from a hybrid. With all-wheel-drive (standard on the Hybrid), the non-hybrid RAV4 manages EPA ratings of 25 city and 33 highway. The Subaru Forester achieves similar marks, 26/33. So the new RAV4 Hybrid earns its keep, especially in city driving. A Kia Niro goes farther on a gallon of gas, but is considerably smaller than the RAV4 and isn't offered with AWD. see full Toyota RAV4 review

It is suburbia, USA and that means you hit lots of stop lights and have to get up to 45, just to stop for another stop light. Rarely is there ever any real highway driving, in which you go for 5+ miles at highway speed. So all in all, a 23-25mpg in this situation is great. At higher highway speeds, for long periods, I say 28mpg (acutal measured using miles and gallons calcs) vs. trusting the car computer. For the size and weight of the car, I'd say that is great! And I leave it in the ECO mode, to save more MPGs though there is a normal mode, and sport mode. The car has plenty of power, even in ECO mode, so don't be fooled by fancy ads, the mpg's are great! see full Toyota RAV4 review

My FR-S easily handles the same in the mid-20s. Maybe less idling / crawling / jackrabbit starting and I'll get the average up. 2014	The BMW 535d isn't the class's fuel economy champ. That title goes to the Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTEC, with EPA ratings of 28 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway (27/38 with AWD). But, considering that the BMW's engine has two more cylinders (for a total of six) and 60 more horsepower, it comes surprisingly close: 26/38 with rear-wheel-drive (as tested) and 26/37 with all-wheel-drive. Audi's similarly sized 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel, though 15 horses less powerful than BMW's, is less efficient in "city" driving, with EPA ratings of 24/38 (with mandatory AWD). In the real-world, the trip computer reports suggested an even larger BMW advantage, especially at lower speeds. My suburban averages with the 535d ranged from 34.6 to 47.2, with high 30s fairly easily achievable (if I avoided the temptation to bury the go-pedal). The Audi's suburban averages were stuck in the mid-30s, with a high (in fewer attempts) of 38.4. On the highway, the Audi managed a coupe mpg over 40 where the speed limit was 60, and a couple under 40 where the speed limit was 70. The rear-wheel-drive BMW virtually tied the all-wheel-drive Audi at high speeds, but achieved 53.8 mpg on one 65-mph freeway trip. This is incredible (yes, I'm wondering about the accuracy of the trip computer myself) for a sedan with the 535d's mass and performance. As with other BMW's, selecting the "eco pro" mode can substantially improve fuel efficiency. Engage this mode, and it becomes easy to drive a powerful BMW like a hypermiler would a Prius. That's a fair number for a solid AWD sedan of its proportions and weight. I once achieved 31.6 mpg on a 75 miles highway run, albeit owing to some judicious hyper-miling driving techniques. 'Normal' highway driving at 80 mph returned 25.6 mpg. Modern SUVs can achieve that today so I don't count fuel economy among the E60's selling points.
