Rear oxy sensor kaput. 2nd time in 2 years, 35,000kms. Each lasted 40,000kms. First one took 4 yrs and second 2 years. These things are problematic. The turbo has a history of repeated failures. It may be related to cold winters. 200 km later Rear oxy sensor again. These things can be reset with a good code reader and it takes 5 minutes or less. This time light back on in 2 km. Humidity seems to be a problem. Replaced sensor.

The linkage between the shifter arm and the tranny is quite exposed and it slowly began to seize up with dirt and corrosion. A lot of WD40, compressed air, and elbow grease freed it up so that grease could be liberally sprayed at the joints.

Replaced front calipers due to wear of the rubber bellows. Pads wore to the point that the rotor wore through the bellows. No indication of wear was heard, Aren't the pads/shims etc supposed to screech just before it is too late? There is a finger as part of the pad installation. Isn't it supposed to scratch the rotor as a wear out warning ?

The subi dealer found the secondary air injection valve on the driver's side siezed closed and quoted $1,100 to replace it. No guarantee would be offered other than this will happen again and it can be expected to happen on the other side too. It will cost an extra $300 for the other side because the intake manifold will have to be removed for access. I was told it was due to corrossion caused by bad design. I found a shop in Montreal that would remove the entire system including the two vaves and the pump for $600 and the guarantee that the problem would not repeat and that the car would pass emission testing because that is done on a warm engine. The system functions for less than a minute as part of the cold start-up sequence.

After the new downpipe and tune mod, upon a cold start the engine rpm was way over 1500 and a growling noise occured. It was intermittant and could not be reproduced at will. Neither the dealer or the tuner could find anything. The noise and high rpm lasted less than 30 secs and then everything went back to normal. After many months of scratching my head I was able to associate the noise to the functionning of the tumble valve, a sort of choke only used at cold start-up. After a disconnect of the batery it took a few days to reappear. Something was being registered in the ECM while running that was erased by disconnecting the battery. I was able to control what was being registed by pulling the fuse to the ECM and resetting the ECM memory back to its base mode. The engine has two modes: the base mode as set by the factory and a running mode that is constantly adjusting the map to what is actually happening. I believe that the growling noise was caused by too high an air flow through the tumble valve causing it to vibrate. That could have led to a failure and injestion of pieces of the valve or blocking of air flow. It seems to be under control now and I have installed a switch in the power to the ECM so I can reset it whenever I wish.

The ventilation fan was replaced as the lower bearing was shot. It was rusty due to a bad design which did not have a drain hole where the lower bearing sits. I drilled a small hole in the housing of the new one to prevent a replay of this stupid failure.

After several years of annual brake maintence in order to avoid siezed pistons and pins I experienced a dragging brake on the front right whilst on a trip away from home. Did not like that. Upon inspection I found a seized piston there and on further inspection both the rear calipers were found to have seized slider pins. I replace all three calipers myself.

Replaced the gas tank, filler pipe, and tank straps. Dealer wanted to scrap the car or $5000 for the work, Mr Muffler wanted $3500. Bought new stands to get the car high enough to comfortably work under it in my driveway. Researched youtube Google, and Subi for how to go about it. Subi requires disassembly of most of the rear suspension/sub frame and use of a transmission jack which I do not have. Youtube has a guy who "works smarter not harder". His method leaves all the rear stuff, frame suspension in the car while he swings it down on the trailing arms. I came up with my smarter way as I did not want to stress the old trailing arm bushings. The 4 major bolts holding the sub frame in place were temporarily replaced by 4 threaded rods with one nut each. After detaching the trailing arm brackets, three bolts each, and the lower shock bolts, one bolt each, the sub frame came straight down on the threaded rods as the nuts descended the rods. It worked very well and I had loads of space. The tank was removed and replaced using my floor jack. The rear backing plates were falling apart and the drum brake were extremely rusted. To change the backing plate required removing and replacing the wheel bearings. It was an expensive job and removing bearings can be very difficult. Many rusted nuts and bolts can be encountered.
