Head gasket blew 500 miles from home. Vehicle was blowing bubbles out of the radiator with the cap off no external block leaks and no contamination of the engine oil. Put in a can of block seal and limped home stopping every 100 miles or so waiting for the engine to cool down and adding antifreeze . Dealer (North End Subaru in Lunenburg Ma) said they pulled the engine out of the car and replaced the head gaskets. They did NOT machine the heads. The car came back a mess. Grease all over the fenders and hood. Antifreeze all over the engine compartment, things not put back together as designed. Clamps on hoses not in place, parts missing, etc. I was very unhappy with the state of the vehicle when I picked it up. The cost was supposed to be 1850.00 but the dealer kicked in $500.00 toward the repair. I called 1-800subaru3 and they declined to assist in paying for the repairs. I'm not sure I can trust this vehicle any longer. Parts replaced: 4 Gasket spark plug, 2 gasket cylinder head, 2 gasket rocker cover 2 Gasket intake manifold, 1 oil filter, 5 5W30 oil, 2 Super coolant, 1 thermostat gasket, 5 studs, 1 radiator assy.
144000 mi Oil level/pressure light stays on after oil and filter changed. I add this repair as a note for other Subaru owners as a hint. I had changed a Fog light bulb during the time that the engine oil was draining from the car. To verify the light which needed replacing I briefly turned the ignition to ON (not starting). I replaced the fog light bulb and continued with the oil change. After finishing changing the engine oil and filter When the car was started the oil light would not go out. When I finished I started the engine and the oil light would not go out. The engine sounded fine but the light was on. I removed the new filter thinking it might be defective and replaced it with another new filter. This had no effect on the oil light. I found a thread on the web saying this had happened to other folks. some drove the car and the light went out. One said he spoke to a Subaru Tech and was told to remove a fuse for about 1 minute. His oil light went out after replacing the fuse and starting the vehicle. I disconnected the battery for a few minutes and the light issue was resolved upon restarting the engine. It appears that the diagnostic bit for low oil level once set is not re-checked on engine re-starts.
