TrueDelta Reviews the Real Gas Mileage of the 2013 Mazda Mazda3

2013 Mazda Mazda3 Real Gas Mileage: Pros
YearComment
2014 Ever since gas guzzling rotary engines almost put Mazda out of business in the 1970s, fuel economy has been a company weakness. The 2013 Mazda3 with a 167-horsepower 2.5-liter engine and five-speed automatic transmission managed only 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway in the EPA's tests. (The same engine with a manual transmission did even worse, 20/28.) The 2014 with a new SKYACTIV 184-horsepower 2.5-liter engine and six-speed automatic transmission fares much better, 27 mpg city and 37 mpg highway. A $1,600 Tech Package (on the tested car) adds a capacitor-based regenerative braking system that bumps these ratings to 28/38. Quite impressive for a large, fairly powerful four-cylinder engine. The i's 155-horsepower 2.0-liter engine does a bit better still, 30/40, but anyone who cares about driving will gladly trade a 2-3 mpg to pick up 29 horsepower. In my real-world, sub-freezing suburban driving, the trip computer reported a two-way average around 40 mpg when I drove with a feather-light right foot. Push the car harder and high-20s to mid-30s happen. The Focus also manages 27/37 in the EPA's tests, but wasn't quite as efficient as the Mazda in my real-world driving. Others including the 23/35 Dodge Dart GT and 21/29 Kia Forte SX don't come close. see full Mazda Mazda3 review

2014 4dr Hatch 184-horsepower 2.5L I4

Even with the 2.5L 'S' Option, the Mazda SkyActiv tech gives the Mazda3 a very impressive 28/39MPG. The 2.0L standard option gives 31/42. That's pretty standard in most new cars, however the performance for that economy is well above average. Good engines, these are. see full Mazda Mazda3 review

30+mpg avg since new; starting to improve to around 33mpg per tankful, mixed driving, more town than highway see full Mazda Mazda3 review
2012 4dr Hatch 155-horsepower 2.0L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic FWD
I drive it on the highway at a constant speed of about 78 with the cruise control on, for my daily commute . Very little traffic on my commute, and speed limit is 70. I get about 33 mpg, or 380 miles per tank. I've found that long-range runs of an hour or more seems to burn out the gunk, and I have better fuel economy for the next week or two. I figure driving near 80 is killing the advertised 39 mpg with the Skyactiv engine. see full Mazda Mazda3 review
2012 4dr Sedan 155-horsepower 2.0L I4

Hard to beat 40 mpg in a car that drives as well and has the performance of the Mazda3. Most ZOOM ZOOM for the price of any car I test drove. see full Mazda Mazda3 review
2012 4dr Sedan 155-horsepower 2.0L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic FWD
This car does very well.. I drive mostly highway during the week, but a lot of rush hour driving means lots of stop and go. Even with that and the around town driving I do on the weekends, I am still averaging 38.1 MPG! see full Mazda Mazda3 review
2012 4dr Hatch 155-horsepower 2.0L I4

Excellent fuel economy with the skyactiv 155hp engine see full Mazda Mazda3 review
2012 4dr Sedan 155-horsepower 2.0L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic FWD
While reviews are mixed, the Skyactiv engine delivers as promised for me. With over 70% city/suburb driving, I've yet to average under 30mpg (odo/pump). Set the cruise control at 65-70 and > 40mpg is easy on a flat highway. see full Mazda Mazda3 review

Fuel economy has been OK. I usually do a 50/50 mix and in good weather, I get in the high 7s/100km or about 30 MPG. In the cold weather, it's been closer to 9L/100km or about 26 MPG. Strangely, it's about the same economy I got with my 99 Civic w/ 4 spd auto. see full Mazda Mazda3 review
