2014 This year every Mazda6 has a 184-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine under its hood. The 2013's less powerful (170hp) 2.5-liter four managed only 21 mpg city, 30 highway. The 2014 does far better: 26/38 with the automatic transmission and 25/37 with the manual. When fitted with a 178-horsepower 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and manual transmission, the Ford Fusion earns identical EPA ratings. An Accord with a 189-horsepower 2.4-liter and manual transmission checks in lower, 24/34. In real world driving, the trip computer reported averages in the 30s--and as high as 38--in casual suburban driving and about 36 on a 70-mph highway. With such impressive numbers, I'm tempted to place fuel economy higher in the reasons to buy a Mazda6. see full Mazda Mazda6 review

6-speed manual FWD		 I've been averaging over 30 mpg per tank at the pump. Computer usually 1mpg too generous. On some trips I've seen 40 mpgs. My is MT and it is rated considerably lower than AT. But in my book it is good since I've done same mileage in my 2011 Mazda3, which also was noisier, less comforting and generally, smaller car with smaller engine. 6-speed shiftable automatic FWD		 This vehicle is a petrol automatic and the fuel economy is not too bad - around town its pretty good but out on the Motorway at 70 - 80 mph it is hardly any better than my previous 15 year old Volvo S80 petrol automaticwhich had a 5 cylinder 2.4 litre (this is a 2.0 litre less powerful engine) and weighed an awful lot more. Its giving aroun 40 mpg. The istop system seems to be a waste of money - it saves virtually nothing, you have to press hard on the brake pedal to make it work and the miles its claims to have saved are minimal - about 20 in 8,000. see full Mazda Mazda6 review

6-speed shiftable automatic FWD		 The fuel economy on this car is pretty good in my opinion. Its a petrol automatic and if I do half a tank of fuel on Motorways with the speedo at 80 - 85 and the rest of the tank around town I will see 40 MPG. I don;t think one can complain too much about this. If I do all short journeys and no motorway mileage I can probably get around 35, which again is pretty good. see full Mazda Mazda6 review

6-speed shiftable automatic FWD		 Fuel economy is good but not as good as Mazda claims, in 9 months I'm averaging about 28 MPG combined in 60/40 city to highway driving and now in the winter months here in Minnesota, where you need to let the vehicle warm up for a minute or two in cold weather conditions and using winter gas. Still better than most cars in this class and the Skyactiv weight reducing and engine and transmission improvements really do seem to contribute to a fuel efficient car that is still fun to drive and nice to look at! see full Mazda Mazda6 review

6-speed shiftable automatic FWD		 Well, the 4 cylinder was wonderful, averaging 25mpg, but the large 3.7 seems to be averaging around 21/22...not much better, if not the same, than the Lincoln MKS. It puts out slightly less horsepower than racing engines of the same size, but eats just as much gas, roughly 15% more than I expected from an engine this size. 2016 The old Volvo XC90's fuel economy was stuck in the early 2000s. When fitted with a 311-horsepower 4.4-liter V8 (last offered for 2011) its EPA ratings were 13 mpg city, 19 mpg highway. The 240-horsepower 3.2-liter inline-six that powered all first-generation XC90s in recent years managed little better, 15/21. The new XC90 is a couple hundred pounds lighter than the original one, and its only engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Two liters doesn't sound like nearly enough to motivate 4,400 pounds of all-wheel-drive crossover? Well, this particular engine happens to be both supercharged and turbocharged (the former to avoid the lag usually associated with a large, high-boost-pressure turbo) to the tune of 316 horsepower, five more than the old V8. The payoff: EPA ratings of 20 mpg city, 25 mpg highway. The highway figure is lower than that of the MDX (26), but the city figure is the best for a gasoline-powered fancy-brand three-row crossover. The trip computer averages during my week with the new XC90 largely confirmed these ratings. With a light foot in the suburbs I observed up to 27 mpg, a couple better than the Acura. Averages around 23 were common. Make frequent use of the boost and the trip computer average sinks as low as 14 mpg, but drive competitors similarly and they guzzle at least as much gas. Want even better fuel economy? Volvo will soon offer the above engine in conjuction with electric motors that bump total output to 400 horsepower. EPA ratings for the T8 hybrid haven't yet been announced, but they're expected to be impressive. Plus it will be possible to plug in the XC90 T8 then drive it about 17 miles on electricity alone. The downside? The T8 will cost $11,800 more than the T6 even after factoring in a $4,600 tax credit. Fuel savings alone won't justify this bump. see full Volvo XC90 review
