Driving style will make a big difference, using a lot of engine power uses gas, no way around that. Try to cruise between 1800-2300rpm, it gives good results. My tuned to 340 hp 1995 Saab 900 SE was getting 29 mpg in mixed city/highway driving. Currently I am driving 75% city and suburban surface streets and the rest highway. Blame the extra weight, but there's less than 400 lbs of that, IIRC. Or blame the AWD, but it's part-time only. I blame the large aero cross-section; it stands about a foot taller than a Golf. If VW would offer a TDI in the Tiguan, they'd sell as many as they could spare to the US market. I'd be standing in line. see full Volkswagen Tiguan review
