TrueDelta Reviews the Real Gas Mileage of the GMC Terrain

GMC Terrain Real Gas Mileage: Pros
YearComment
2018 Diesel engines burn far cleaner than they used to. But even the best retain disadvantages. Diesel fuel is nasty, greasy stuff, with a feel closer to motor oil than gasoline. Spill any on your hands, clothes, shoes, or car while filling up and it doesn't evaporate away like gas does. Also, the GMC Terrain's exhaust stinks, especially when its engine is cold. You might want to have the fresh air vent closed if you'll be reversing after starting up the vehicle. Given these disadvantages, a diesel better deliver strong EPA fuel economy ratings, and this four-wheel-drive GMC does: 28 mpg city, 38 mpg highway. (Dropping 4WD adds another mpg to the highway rating.) The Jaguar F-Pace diesel lags, with 26/33, as might be expected given its larger (2.0- vs. 1.6-liter), considerably more powerful (180- vs. 137-horsepower) engine. The RAV4 Hybrid is more economical in city driving, with an EPA rating of 34 mpg, but well behind in highway driving, with an EPA rating of 30. This is typical of diesel vs. hybrid comparisons, as hybrids are designed to recoup energy otherwise burned off by the brakes and thus deliver the largest bump in city driving. Even more than with most vehicles I test, the Terrain diesel's real-world fuel economy varied dramatically based on driving style and conditions. In the suburbs, trip computer averages ranged from 25 to 40 mpg, with most results around 30. On the highway, the trip computer reported low 40s in one direction, then low 30s in the other (on two different days, with no especially strong wind on either). In a suburban test drive of the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, the highest trip computer average I could achieve was 38 mpg. Quite good for a compact crossover, and nearly even with the best suburban average I observed in the Terrain diesel. Compared to a Terrain with the standard gas engine, the diesel rates four mpg high in the city and ten mpg higher on the highway. Compared to the Terrain with its base gasoline engine, the Jeep Compass rates lower in the city (22 vs. 24 mpg) but higher on the highway (30 vs. 28 mpg), so gas-to-gas they're about even. see full GMC Terrain review
GMC Terrain Real Gas Mileage: Cons
YearComment
2010 On a positive note, the larger V6 earns the same EPA fuel economy ratings as the old one. On a less positive note, it also earns the same fuel economy ratings as the much larger, 4,850-pound Acadia: 16 city, 23 highway. In suburban driving the trip computer reported high teens to low twenties, a few mpg below lighter, more compact competitors. The four-cylinder gets 22/32 with FWD, 20/29 with AWD, but many owners have failed to approach these numbers in the real world. see full GMC Terrain review

2012 4dr SUV 182-horsepower 2.4L I4

Although I have never seen this truck get the estimated fuel economy it boasts about in advertising, considering the shear mass of it and it's breadbox front end, with the I4 the fuel economy is very good considering it is a heavy little beast with AWD. I can average 700 kms. out of a tank of fuel no problem and on longer jaunts have seen it break 800 kms. If you are one of those people who complain about fuel consumption in this truck- you should have bought a Prius... because for what it is, it is exceptional on fuel. Try a different brand of fuel for a while, some brands have more additives and burn quicker. see full GMC Terrain review

2015 4dr SUV 301-horsepower 3.6L V6
6-speed shiftable automatic AWD
Fuel economy, for a vehicle over 4,000lbs, and a 300hp V6 engine, is going to be low. But at between 15-18mpg, for suburban driving, it seems a bit low. I wanted to the V6 so it would not struggle, and I did that knowing the MPG's were not great, but I hoped it would be better on the highway. What I found most disappointing, was that with the V6, you don't get an "economy" switch. The 4 cylinder version does, but not the V6. Why does this matter? Because with a V6, with much more power than a 4 cylinder, using economy mode would not feel bad. On the Terrain, with the 4 cylinder you are starting with less, so taking away from less isn't alwyas good. But taking away from the V6, would not be as impacting. see full GMC Terrain review

TrueDelta Reviews the Real Gas Mileage of the Mazda Mazda6

Mazda Mazda6 Real Gas Mileage: Pros
YearComment
2014 This year every Mazda6 has a 184-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine under its hood. The 2013's less powerful (170hp) 2.5-liter four managed only 21 mpg city, 30 highway. The 2014 does far better: 26/38 with the automatic transmission and 25/37 with the manual. When fitted with a 178-horsepower 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and manual transmission, the Ford Fusion earns identical EPA ratings. An Accord with a 189-horsepower 2.4-liter and manual transmission checks in lower, 24/34. In real world driving, the trip computer reported averages in the 30s--and as high as 38--in casual suburban driving and about 36 on a 70-mph highway. With such impressive numbers, I'm tempted to place fuel economy higher in the reasons to buy a Mazda6. see full Mazda Mazda6 review

I've been averaging over 30 mpg per tank at the pump. Computer usually 1mpg too generous. On some trips I've seen 40 mpgs. My is MT and it is rated considerably lower than AT. But in my book it is good since I've done same mileage in my 2011 Mazda3, which also was noisier, less comforting and generally, smaller car with smaller engine. So, I do about same MPG average and HWY as my 2011 Mazda3 see full Mazda Mazda6 review

This vehicle is a petrol automatic and the fuel economy is not too bad - around town its pretty good but out on the Motorway at 70 - 80 mph it is hardly any better than my previous 15 year old Volvo S80 petrol automaticwhich had a 5 cylinder 2.4 litre (this is a 2.0 litre less powerful engine) and weighed an awful lot more. Its giving aroun 40 mpg. The istop system seems to be a waste of money - it saves virtually nothing, you have to press hard on the brake pedal to make it work and the miles its claims to have saved are minimal - about 20 in 8,000. see full Mazda Mazda6 review

6-speed shiftable automatic FWD
The fuel economy on this car is pretty good in my opinion. Its a petrol automatic and if I do half a tank of fuel on Motorways with the speedo at 80 - 85 and the rest of the tank around town I will see 40 MPG. I don;t think one can complain too much about this. If I do all short journeys and no motorway mileage I can probably get around 35, which again is pretty good. see full Mazda Mazda6 review
2014 4dr Sedan 184-horsepower 2.5L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic FWD
Fuel economy is good but not as good as Mazda claims, in 9 months I'm averaging about 28 MPG combined in 60/40 city to highway driving and now in the winter months here in Minnesota, where you need to let the vehicle warm up for a minute or two in cold weather conditions and using winter gas. Still better than most cars in this class and the Skyactiv weight reducing and engine and transmission improvements really do seem to contribute to a fuel efficient car that is still fun to drive and nice to look at! see full Mazda Mazda6 review

26/38 rating is better than other sedans in its class. Averaging 32 with daily up and down mountain treks. Car maintains speed well and uses little gas keeping speed up. see full Mazda Mazda6 review

6-speed shiftable automatic FWD
Fuel economy over 71k has been 32.1 MPG. Pretty darn good for a non-hybrid and driving 75-85 mph pretty consistently. see full Mazda Mazda6 review
2014 4dr Sedan 184-horsepower 2.5L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic FWD
I regularly get 33-34 mpg commuting 35-55 mph with some stop and go driving distances of 30+ miles each way. Constant speed driving on interstates through central PA, DC, VA, CT, RI, with seldom slow traffic backups, the car gets 36-37 mpg. Usually set at about 3-4 miles over posted or at traffic flow speeds. see full Mazda Mazda6 review

So far seems higher than EPA estimates. Gearing close so that I can drive 30-40 around town in 5ht or even 6th. 6th should be further out to improve mileage even more. see full Mazda Mazda6 review

28.5 mpg. Driving to the interstate, taking the interstate to the other side of town, then driving to work (or home). see full Mazda Mazda6 review

Well, the 4 cylinder was wonderful, averaging 25mpg, but the large 3.7 seems to be averaging around 21/22...not much better, if not the same, than the Lincoln MKS. But I DO drive this car really hard. Its difficult not to, its so much fun. see full Mazda Mazda6 review

Hmmm...yes, this is the sore point. But to tell you the truth, I am getting a little tired of pursueing one at the loss of the other. And do enjoy regular gas. see full Mazda Mazda6 review

I get only 26mpg highway and 19-21 mpg city with 4 cylinder. My other car (toyota solara) do over 33 mpg highway easily even with winter gas. see full Mazda Mazda6 review

The only minor complaints I have about this car comes from the engine. It puts out slightly less horsepower than racing engines of the same size, but eats just as much gas, roughly 15% more than I expected from an engine this size. This is something Mazda has drastically improved in recent years, but remains something to watch out for in their larger engines before 2010. see full Mazda Mazda6 review

26mpg was the most I got on one long trip down south. I drove it mostly highway and usually got 21mpg, even when taking it easy. Around town I got 18mpg. Not great for a 4-cyl engine. My Saab has almost as much power and gets 24mpg around town. see full Mazda Mazda6 review

Not very good unless you are on the highway only cruising. On the highway it can get 28+ mpg. However, in mixed driving you will be lucky to get 20 mpg. see full Mazda Mazda6 review

Not necessarily a dislike, just a natural trade off for having 270 horsepower on tap. Averaging 22mpg with mostly city and traffic driving. It actually still bests my old 00 VW Golf turbo, which typically mustered only 20mpg with half the horsepower! see full Mazda Mazda6 review
