2014 Ever since gas guzzling rotary engines almost put Mazda out of business in the 1970s, fuel economy has been a company weakness. The 2013 Mazda3 with a 167-horsepower 2.5-liter engine and five-speed automatic transmission managed only 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway in the EPA's tests. (The same engine with a manual transmission did even worse, 20/28.) The 2014 with a new SKYACTIV 184-horsepower 2.5-liter engine and six-speed automatic transmission fares much better, 27 mpg city and 37 mpg highway. A $1,600 Tech Package (on the tested car) adds a capacitor-based regenerative braking system that bumps these ratings to 28/38. Quite impressive for a large, fairly powerful four-cylinder engine. The i's 155-horsepower 2.0-liter engine does a bit better still, 30/40, but anyone who cares about driving will gladly trade a 2-3 mpg to pick up 29 horsepower. In my real-world, sub-freezing suburban driving, the trip computer reported a two-way average around 40 mpg when I drove with a feather-light right foot. Push the car harder and high-20s to mid-30s happen. The Focus also manages 27/37 in the EPA's tests, but wasn't quite as efficient as the Mazda in my real-world driving. 2014 This year every Mazda6 has a 184-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine under its hood. The 2013's less powerful (170hp) 2.5-liter four managed only 21 mpg city, 30 highway. The 2014 does far better: 26/38 with the automatic transmission and 25/37 with the manual. When fitted with a 178-horsepower 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and manual transmission, the Ford Fusion earns identical EPA ratings. An Accord with a 189-horsepower 2.4-liter and manual transmission checks in lower, 24/34. In real world driving, the trip computer reported averages in the 30s--and as high as 38--in casual suburban driving and about 36 on a 70-mph highway. With such impressive numbers, I'm tempted to place fuel economy higher in the reasons to buy a Mazda6. see full Mazda Mazda6 review

But in my book it is good since I've done same mileage in my 2011 Mazda3, which also was noisier, less comforting and generally, smaller car with smaller engine. Its giving aroun 40 mpg. 6-speed shiftable automatic FWD		 The only minor complaints I have about this car comes from the engine. It puts out slightly less horsepower than racing engines of the same size, but eats just as much gas, roughly 15% more than I expected from an engine this size. 6-speed manual AWD		 26mpg was the most I got on one long trip down south. I drove it mostly highway and usually got 21mpg, even when taking it easy. Around town I got 18mpg. Not great for a 4-cyl engine. My Saab has almost as much power and gets 24mpg around town. see full Mazda Mazda6 review
