2013	Volkswagen's hybrid approach is nothing like Toyota's, and not much like Honda's, either. There's no CVT transmission. And no Atkinson cycle engine where the intake valves remain open longer (good for efficiency, not good for power). Instead, the transmission is a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual much like that offered in VW's non-hybrids. The engine is a small, 1.4-liter four-cylinder--but with a turbocharger. Total output, 170 horsepower, far exceeds the Acura's 115. As in nearly all current hybrids except those from Toyota and Ford, the electric motor is sandwiched between the engine and transmission. Unlike in the Honda, the engine can be declutched from the electric motor, permitting the latter to propel the car all by itself. With no CVT, no Atkinson cycle, and a turbo, VW's recipe doesn't sound like the best one for fuel economy. But the Jetta Hybrid does quite well. Though far more powerful than the ILX Hybrid, the VW's EPA numbers are much better, 42 mpg city, 48 mpg highway vs. 39 and 38, respectively. What's more, with its engine overmatched ILX is likely to fall short of its EPA numbers for all but the most patient drivers. In my driving the Jetta Hybrid's trip computer reported an average of 46 in suburban driving and about 40 driving on a 70-mph highway (less on a hot day going in one direction, more on a cooler day when returning). On rural, 55-mph highways, the trip computer reported averages in the high 40s, verifying the EPA number. I've observed 50-plus mpg in a Toyota Prius. But the much quicker (we'll get to this) Jetta Hybrid has all of the other hybrids beat. The Jetta Hybrid does require premium gas. But so does the ILX Hybrid. What about the Jetta TDI diesel? The EPA estimates much worse fuel economy, 30 mpg city and 42 mpg highway. But in a recent test of a Beetle with the same engine I observed trip computer averages close to those of the Jetta Hybrid. Fuel economy is amazing, have gotten as low as 4.9L/100km with 110 km/hr highway driving and one driver and one passenger. Loaded, it still comes under 5.5. (I am not a heavy footed driver but do cruise at posted highway speeds plus a bit. Comfortable all around. Three months and 12,000km into ownership and I like it more and more. I checked out a whole bunch of cars and wanted fuel economy so had looked at the hybrids then thought that this is a proven technology, drove one and was sold on it. 2015	The SE's grippier tires knock the Toyota Camry Hybrid's EPA ratings down from 43/39 to 40/38. The Ford Fusion Hybrid tests better, 44/41, while the Honda Accord Hybrid tests far better, 50/45. Then there's the real world, where, according to the cars' trip computers, my suburban average was in the low 40s in all three (the Lincoln MKZ standing in for the Fusion) and topped 50 on trips with no unexpected stops (i.e. any braking could be gradual enough to rely almost entirely on energy regeneration rather than the friction brakes). The Camry Hybrid acheived the best reported mpg on my standard school-to-home run--an astounding 70.6--but it started this particular trip with a eight bars in the battery pack (fully charged) and ended it with just two. You can only drive two, maybe three miles on electricity, but when the route totals 7.5 miles even a couple with the gas engine off can generously pad the average. On a 70-mph highway the Camry's trip computer reported averages in the low 40s. I wasn't able to test the Honda on the highway. The Lincoln MKZ hybrid's reported somewhat better numbers than the Camry's, but there's not a large percentage difference between 43.7 and 47.4. Any number of factors besides the cars themselves (trip computer accuracy, driving speed, wind conditions) could account for this difference. Frankly, I'm mightly impressed by any midsize sedan that can consistently average over 40 mpg, as these all can with light-footed acceleration and (especially) braking. see full Toyota Camry review

The latest response from the dealer is the milage will improve after I have driven 12,000 miles . That is the fourth milestone i have been told to reach for better fuel economy. The dealer refused to put the car in the shop to check out this problem. Last week i drove 286 miles to Louisville, KY and back with 246 miles on interstate highways at 65 mph. I drove with the Eco light lite with slow acceleration. I have spoken with other 2012 owners and they report the same milage. On the highway, it's particularly sensitive to speed, as the car is not very aerodynamic. I got as bad as 16 l/100 Km in the city, and as low as 8.8 l/100 Km on long trips.
