Volkswagen Jetta Real Gas Mileage: Pros

2013	Volkswagen's hybrid approach is nothing like Toyota's, and not much like Honda's, either. There's no CVT transmission. And no Atkinson cycle engine where the intake valves remain open longer (good for efficiency, not good for power). Instead, the transmission is a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual much like that offered in VW's non-hybrids. The engine is a small, 1.4-liter four-cylinder--but with a turbocharger. Total output, 170 horsepower, far exceeds the Acura's 115. As in nearly all current hybrids except those from Toyota and Ford, the electric motor is sandwiched between the engine and transmission. Unlike in the Honda, the engine can be declutched from the electric motor, permitting the latter to propel the car all by itself. With no CVT, no Atkinson cycle, and a turbo, VW's recipe doesn't sound like the best one for fuel economy. But the Jetta Hybrid does quite well. Though far more powerful than the ILX Hybrid, the VW's EPA numbers are much better, 42 mpg city, 48 mpg highway vs. 39 and 38, respectively. What's more, with its engine overmatched ILX is likely to fall short of its EPA numbers for all but the most patient drivers. In my driving the Jetta Hybrid's trip computer reported an average of 46 in suburban driving and about 40 driving on a 70-mph highway (less on a hot day going in one direction, more on a cooler day when returning). On rural, 55-mph highways, the trip computer reported averages in the high 40s, verifying the EPA number. I've observed 50-plus mpg in a Toyota Prius. But the much quicker (we'll get to this) Jetta Hybrid has all of the other hybrids beat. The Jetta Hybrid does require premium gas. But so does the ILX Hybrid. What about the Jetta TDI diesel? The EPA estimates much worse fuel economy, 30 mpg city and 42 mpg highway. But in a recent test of a Beetle with the same engine I observed trip computer averages close to those of the Jetta Hybrid. It would be higher but it is a fun car and it is difficult to maintain discipline for an entire tank of fuel. 500 miles is a long way to drive conservative lol. My economy keeps rising as the engine breaks in which can be up to 60000 miles. Fuel economy is amazing, have gotten as low as 4.9L/100km with 110 km/hr highway driving and one driver and one passenger. Loaded, it still comes under 5.5. (I am not a heavy footed driver but do cruise at posted highway speeds plus a bit. Comfortable all around. Three months and 12,000km into ownership and I like it more and more. I checked out a whole bunch of cars and wanted fuel economy so had looked at the hybrids then thought that this is a proven technology, drove one and was sold on it. Our first trip was to the Tri-state area in West NC. Hand calculated to 46.3mpg. We constantly get 42-43mpg on the highway, and 37-39 around town, which is 30mph driving. 2019	Toyota improved the RAV4 Hybrid's fuel economy dramatically with the redesign. The model's EPA highway rating has surged from 30 to 38 mpg, while its city rating has jumped from 34 to 41 mpg. In suburban driving I easily achieved trip computer averages in the low 40s, with a max of 50. On a 70-mph highway I observed averages from 35 to 38 mpg. While still much less efficient than a Prius, which is lighter and lower, the RAV4 now delivers the fuel economy people expect from a hybrid. With all-wheel-drive (standard on the Hybrid), the non-hybrid RAV4 manages EPA ratings of 25 city and 33 highway. The Subaru Forester achieves similar marks, 26/33. So the new RAV4 Hybrid earns its keep, especially in city driving. A Kia Niro goes farther on a gallon of gas, but is considerably smaller than the RAV4 and isn't offered with AWD. see full Toyota RAV4 review

It is suburbia, USA and that means you hit lots of stop lights and have to get up to 45, just to stop for another stop light. Rarely is there ever any real highway driving, in which you go for 5+ miles at highway speed. So all in all, a 23-25mpg in this situation is great. At higher highway speeds, for long periods, I say 28mpg (acutal measured using miles and gallons calcs) vs. trusting the car computer. For the size and weight of the car, I'd say that is great! And I leave it in the ECO mode, to save more MPGs though there is a normal mode, and sport mode. The car has plenty of power, even in ECO mode, so don't be fooled by fancy ads, the mpg's are great! see full Toyota RAV4 review

My FR-S easily handles the same in the mid-20s. Maybe less idling / crawling / jackrabbit starting and I'll get the average up. After 3 days and more "normal" driving (some highway in there), I hit low 20s (if the calculator was right - it could be 2 MPG optimistic like the one in my FR-S). see full Toyota RAV4 review
