Driving style will make a big difference, using a lot of engine power uses gas, no way around that. Try to cruise between 1800-2300rpm, it gives good results. My tuned to 340 hp 1995 Saab 900 SE was getting 29 mpg in mixed city/highway driving. Currently I am driving 75% city and suburban surface streets and the rest highway. I am using (per Ford) Regular 87 in it and it seems fine. I ran one tank of 93 Premium and did not notice a difference in performance or mileage. see full Ford Taurus review
2008	4dr Sedan 263-horsepower 3.5L V6 6-speed automatic FWD	It's got a 20 gallon tank and I basically never see 400 miles on the trip counter. 20mpg in mixed use (almost 40 mile round trip commute) has been something to get used to after living with a 4-cylinderMazda 6. In addition, when I hit 1/4 tank on the gas gauge, the range computer plummets to the point that I start planning a fuel stop within 50 miles of the 1/4 tank mark.
