2016 A number of BMW 3 Series variants offer better fuel economy than the tested 340i xDrive. You can get a conventional four-cylinder (with EPA ratings of 23 city, 35 highway), a diesel (32/42), or even a plug-in hybrid (28/34). But for a 320-horsepower all-wheel-drive sedan, the 340i xDrive rates quite well: 21/31 with an automatic, 19/29 with a manual. Some six-cylinder competitors score nearly as well, but none quite match the BMW. For example, the tested Jaguar XE with all-wheel-drive and its mandatory automatic rates 20/29. The BMW's trip computer reported even more impressive real-world averages. In light-footed suburban driving it reported 32 mpg, and on a 70-mph highway it reported 37 mpg in one direction and 34 mpg in the other. see full BMW 3-Series review

2014 This year every Mazda6 has a 184-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine under its hood. The 2013's less powerful (170hp) 2.5-liter four managed only 21 mpg city, 30 highway. The 2014 does far better: 26/38 with the automatic transmission and 25/37 with the manual. When fitted with a 178-horsepower 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and manual transmission, the Ford Fusion earns identical EPA ratings. An Accord with a 189-horsepower 2.4-liter and manual transmission checks in lower, 24/34. In real world driving, the trip computer reported averages in the 30s--and as high as 38--in casual suburban driving and about 36 on a 70-mph highway. With such impressive numbers, I'm tempted to place fuel economy higher in the reasons to buy a Mazda6. see full Mazda Mazda6 review

6-speed manual FWD		 I've been averaging over 30 mpg per tank at the pump. Computer usually 1mpg too generous. On some trips I've seen 40 mpgs. My is MT and it is rated considerably lower than AT. But in my book it is good since I've done same mileage in my 2011 Mazda3, which also was noisier, less comforting and generally, smaller car with smaller engine. 6-speed shiftable automatic FWD		 This vehicle is a petrol automatic and the fuel economy is not too bad - around town its pretty good but out on the Motorway at 70 - 80 mph it is hardly any better than my previous 15 year old Volvo S80 petrol automaticwhich had a 5 cylinder 2.4 litre (this is a 2.0 litre less powerful engine) and weighed an awful lot more. Its giving aroun 40 mpg. The istop system seems to be a waste of money - it saves virtually nothing, you have to press hard on the brake pedal to make it work and the miles its claims to have saved are minimal - about 20 in 8,000. see full Mazda Mazda6 review

Its a petrol automatic and if I do half a tank of fuel on Motorways with the speedo at 80 - 85 and the rest of the tank around town I will see 40 MPG. 6-speed shiftable automatic FWD		 The only minor complaints I have about this car comes from the engine. It puts out slightly less horsepower than racing engines of the same size, but eats just as much gas, roughly 15% more than I expected from an engine this size. 2006 4dr Sedan turbocharged 274hp 2.3L I4
6-speed manual AWD		 26mpg was the most I got on one long trip down south. I drove it mostly highway and usually got 21mpg, even when taking it easy. Around town I got 18mpg. Not great for a 4-cyl engine. My Saab has almost as much power and gets 24mpg around town. see full Mazda Mazda6 review
