TrueDelta Reviews the Real Gas Mileage of the Ford Fiesta

Ford Fiesta Real Gas Mileage: Pros
YearComment
2014 The ostensible point of a three-cylinder engine is superior fuel economy. Fewer cylinders generate less friction. On top of this, the Fiesta's new engine is smaller, just one liter compared to the regular Fiesta's 1.6 and the Fit's 1.5. It is turbocharged to compensate for this size difference. The payoff: EPA ratings compared to the regular Fiesta improve from 28 mpg city, 36 mpg highway to 31 and 43, respectively. With a manual transmission, the Honda rates just a bit better than the regular Fiesta, and well short of the Fiesta EcoBoost on the highway: 29/37. But fit the Fit with a CVT (continously variable transmission), and its ratings roughly match those of the manual-only Fiesta EcoBoost: 33/41. In real-world driving, the Fiesta EcoBoost's fuel economy varies widely depending on how much you exercise the turbo. The trip computer reported suburban averages as high as 51.7 mpg, and as low as 28.6. When I drove the car casually but without care to maximize fuel economy, the trip computer reported about 37 mpg. With some care, about 45. Very good, certainly, but some other small cars with less expensive, more conventional engines (such as the Nissan Versa Note, EPA 27/36 with a manual but 31/40 with a CVT) are about equally good. see full Ford Fiesta review

Great fuel economy. Consumer Reports indicated that it was one of the few cars they have tested that actually got better than EPA during their (sometimes high performance) testing. I am getting better than 38 mpg in a mix of city/highway. see full Ford Fiesta review
2011 4dr Hatch 120-horsepower 1.6L I4

One of the best combinations of fuel economy and purchase cost you will find in the US. Among the most fuel-efficient inexpensive subcompacts on the market today (though it can be beaten in fuel economy by a number of hybrids that cost significantly more). I've gotten 29-30 mpg in pure city driving, 33-35 in suburbs, and 37-46 on the highway. 5-speed manual has a somewhat lower than ideal 5th gear, which hurts gas mileage over 65 mph (37 mpg was at at 75 mph, 46 mpg at 55-60). Also has a larger than typical tank to go with that efficiency (12.4 gallons), giving you a useful range of up to 500 miles on the highway, and a good 100 miles more per tank than my previous car. Wish list:
  • SFE package with a 6-speed manual
  • "Econ AC" setting that would cool half as strongly and cut out during acceleration
  • auto start-stop
  • the 1-liter ecoboost I've been hearing about for ages but still isn't quite available in the US

TrueDelta Reviews the Real Gas Mileage of the Acura MDX

Acura MDX Real Gas Mileage: Pros
YearComment
2014 In addition to trimming the size and weight of the MDX, Acura also reduced the size of the V6 engine from 3.7 to 3.5 liters. Thanks to direct injection the new, smaller engine is nearly as powerful (290 vs. 300 horsepower), and is even a little punchier at low rpm. It can run on three cylinders to save fuel while cruising. The QX60's V6, also 3.5 liters, lacks direct injection and is only good for 265 horsepower. Even though the Infiniti's CVT (continuously variable transmission) can hold the engine at its power peak, this isn't enough to compensate for its power and weight disadvantages. The MDX is noticeably quicker, if still not thrillingly quick. (It can get to 60 mph in about seven seconds.) Then again, fuel economy appears to have been the priority. In the EPA's tests, the 2013 MDX rated 16 mpg city, 21 mpg highway. Infiniti, aiming to top these marks with the JX35 did so by two mpg (18/23). A redesigned CVT shared with the new Nissan Pathfinder bumps the QX60 to 19/25. The new MDX trails the Infiniti by one mpg in the city, but tops it on the highway with a 27 mpg rating--tying the new diesel BMW X5 and impressive for a gas-powered three-row crossover. In real-world suburban driving with an economy-minded right foot the trip computer reported averages from 21 to 23. With a feather-light foot and good luck with traffic lights, 25 can happen. Drive the MDX hard enough to enjoy the snarl that kicks in with the big VTEC cam lobes at 5,000 rpm, on the other hand, and mpg falls into the mid-teens. Highway driving confirmed the EPA estimate. see full Acura MDX review

Gas mileage is not good. The best I get is around 20 mpg, and use 91 octane as reccommended. I've tried mid-grade 89 octane with no noticable difference but for $1.00-$2.00 per tankful, I'm choosing to stick with what is reccommended. It would be nice to have a front wheel drive only version which would save on gas, but it's not offered. see full Acura MDX review
