2013	Yes, the most impressive aspect of the Focus ST's engine is its fuel economy. A Mitsubishi Evo is rated 17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway by the EPA. A MazdaSpeed3, 18/25. The Ford Focus ST easily exceeds them both, with guilt-free EPA ratings of 23/32. Not that the engine's performance isn't also impressive. With 252 horsepower and 270 foot-pounds of torque, the limiting factor at low speeds is the ability of the front tires to transfer this power and torque to the pavement. At higher speeds it's quick, but not blazingly so. At 3,300 pounds, the Focus ST is too heavy for that. The car's quietness and refinement aren't entirely without a downside. The turbo's boost comes on as a smooth surge, not with a punch to the lower back. Consequently, the Focus ST doesn't feel as quick as it is. see full Ford Focus review

But the ST struggles to achieve anything close to EPA estimates in the real world. Mileage is more like a minivan than a small sedan. 2014	Those seeking to maximize fuel economy should check out the Corolla LE Eco, with EPA ratings for 30 mpg city, 42 highway. The regular LE checks in at 29/38, and the S at 29/37. Even the last is within spitting distance of the best in the segment, including the 30/39 Sentra. In my efficiency-minded suburban driving the trip computer reported an average of 37.7, a bit better than the 36I managed with the Sentra. Driving with less care for fuel economy netted 32, about even with the Nissan. The Toyota couldn't quite match the Nissanona 65-mph highway drive, though, with a two-way trip computer average of 38 vs. 40 (quite close to those EPA estimates). see full Toyota Corolla review

2007	4dr Sedan 126-horsepower 1.8L I4 4-speed automatic FWD	This car gets 25 City, 35 Highway. It looks like it should be able to do better, but it does not. The 3-speed Automatic with Overdrive (4-speed in reality) is dated and is only okay with the engine's performance. The engine itself, the 1ZZFE, has very few flaws, but is the final evolution of a 90's engine design, that gets okay horsepower, but goes through gas more than it should. And when they get older, they do go through more gas than they should. In addition, the engine can't handle E10 in cold weather (regular gasoline with "up to" 10 percent ethanol) without problems, requiring you to spend more on "REC" fuel, which is non-ethanol pure gasoline. On top of that, the drive by wire throttle has a noticeable delay between the hair trigger throttle and the engine surging forward, making smooth starts with the automatic difficult. see full Toyota Corolla review
