Mini Reliability for the Year Ending June 30, 2018

General NotesHow do we select "competing car models"? Users of TrueDelta's car price comparison tool most often compare these cars to the Mini.

Models and statistics marked with an asterisk (*) have very low sample sizes. These results, visible only to logged-in members, provide only a rough estimate of car reliability.

Any result under 5 repair trips per 100 cars is likely a result of the small sample size, and should be expected to increase in future updates.

New models often start out with high repair rates, and then improve as the manufacturer identifies and addresses common problems. MethodologyOnly successfully completed repairs are currently included in the analysis. Routine maintenance, most wear items, recalls, and problems fixed with just a reflash or warning light reset are not included.

Mini Reliability

You won't find Mini reliability information like this anywhere else. Actual repair frequencies, not just vague dots. So you can tell how much the Mini truly differs from competing car models in reliability.

These stats are promptly updated four times a year, to much more closely track Mini reliability as the cars age. Others tell you how reliable the Mini was a year ago, when the cars were a year younger and had 12,000 fewer miles on them. Only TrueDelta tells you how reliable the Mini has been recently.

6-speed manual FWD		 3.5 years of ownership, only serious problem was a leaking thermostat housing, apparently a common defect on this vehicle. Covered under warranty. Full brake and rotor job was just performed with only 35K miles, that is my only complaint. see full Mini review

6-speed manual FWD		 In two years of driving, I have not experienced any mechanical breakdowns with my MINI. Even then, I still have reservations regarding its reliability. So far, there have been two recalls on this particular year and model, one involving a failure that could result in a fire! In addition, an intermittent problem with the low oil pressure sensor and an unexplained check engine illumination has caused me to loose sleep at one point. While these have all been fixed under warranty, I worry about the out-of-pocket cost of maintaining this baby. see full Mini review

6-speed manual FWD		 After this thing hit 52,000 miles it suddenly decided to start sucking money at a high rate of speed. The timing change started rattling on cold starts, (2k out of warranty), and needed to be replaced along with the tensioners. The dealership claimed they never really see this problem, and it's caused from low oil levels. They claimed the mini was a quart low, but it was fine when I checked it a few days prior. A search on any Mini forum will pull up tons of reports for this problem. Flash forward a few thousand miles and the reduced engine power light comes on and the turbo stopped coming on. I was 50 miles into a 1k mile trip, so I turned around and went home, to wait until Monday morning to take it in. I'll have to find the repair sheet, but oil leaked out and went into the turbo solenoid which needs changed, along with wiring, and either a valve or pump. 6-speed shiftable automatic FWD		 Have had the car for 4 months and it has spent 3 weeks in the shop. 3 warning lights, a fog light, intermittent whippers not working, etc. Way to many issues for a new car and the service is only average at best. see full Mini review
