Nissan Reliability for the Year Ending June 30, 2018

General NotesHow do we select "competing car models"? Users of TrueDelta's car price comparison tool most often compare these cars to the Nissan.

Models and statistics marked with an asterisk (*) have very low sample sizes. These results, visible only to logged-in members, provide only a rough estimate of car reliability.

Any result under 5 repair trips per 100 cars is likely a result of the small sample size, and should be expected to increase in future updates.

New models often start out with high repair rates, and then improve as the manufacturer identifies and addresses common problems. MethodologyOnly successfully completed repairs are currently included in the analysis. Routine maintenance, most wear items, recalls, and problems fixed with just a reflash or warning light reset are not included.

5-speed manual FWD		 I trust my car and know it will go when I need it. The bumpers, front and rear, are light plastic and should be upgraded but I am told most other cars are the same these days. Nissan advises against towing with the car likely because of the small engine but it tows behind my mh quite nicely. I will take this car over the VW Passat which I would rate as the more unreliable car I have ever owned. see full Nissan review

CVT FWD		 For 20k miles so far mailnly used as a commuter car and well, everything else too I don't see any issues other than the regular oil changes and tire rotations. Time will tell how well the CVT holds up but from Nissan's standpoint they had it for a long time and I expect it to hold up. FYI I did not do those "mandatory" maintenance checkups, mostly do it at the 30k mark. see full Nissan review

5-speed automatic 4WD, part-time w/low range		 Bulletproof. Drive and enjoy. Wear and tear is the only things you will care about. Trust me, I owned 4 of them, and they all are still in the family. 2011 4dr Hatch 147-horsepower Electric
1-speed automatic FWD		 One of the advantages I was looking forward to, owning a Leaf, was the fact that the power train is so much simpler than a gas powered car. These are some of the parts in a gas powered car that can't go wrong with my all electric Leaf: 1) No gears/transmission to ever slip or go out, just a gearshift knob that is really just an electric switch, with no moving parts other than the switch itself. 2) No fuel pump/filter to need maintenance on. 3) No fuel injection or carborator to go out or have problems. 4) No air filters for the motor to replace. 5) No oil to change or oil filter to replace. 6) No radiator to repair. No coolant level to check. 7) No spark plugs, cap, rotor or points to replace or maintain 8) No belts, pullies or chains to break, wear or replace. 9) No engine overheating possible. 10) No catalytic converter to replace. 11) No muffler or exhaust system to replace/maintain. 12) The electric motor acts as a generator that slows the car down when I take my foot off the accelerator and it charges the battery as I coast to a stop. Also, the regenerative breaking means that the Leaf has a generator attached to one of the rear wheels that also slows the car down as I apply the breaks and that also charges the battery as I break to a stop. This regenerative breaking and electric motor generation means that I use less of the actual breaks on the car and this improves the lifespan of my break pads. I will change the break pads and rotors a lot less often than a normal gas powered car or even a hybrid. see full Nissan review

CVT AWD		 This Murano LE AWD has never failed me in 6 months of operation in variable extreme frigid conditions. I have only had to change the oil, put air in the tires, and gas it up. I wonder what another winter or two of another 20,000 miles will do long term! see full Nissan review

It was difficult to recreate so it took a few months to get a dealer to address the issue. 1-speed automatic FWD		 The build quality was in line. HOWEVER, what destroys this car as a purchase choice is one thing: The cutting corners and bad engineering decisions (political or otherwise) to make the car battery air cooled. This simply doesn't work very well in warmer climates. The folks up in Seattle don't see this but where it gets above 95 degrees such as CALIF, TX, ARIZONA are the folks are starting to seeing this battery fade rapidly with pernament heat damage. Read about how to care for a LI-ON. We baby'ed this car battery for all the things we could, but the heat is getting it. This vehicle is edging toward being the orphaned 3rd car because it won't be long before it cannot do our simple 35 mile roundtrip commute. A very expensive loss for us. Learn from this and DON"T BUY THIS CAR MODEL. Buy a Chevy Volt instead. We have that car too....and we fight over who drives it. It has a conservative approach...liquid battery management to keep the battery at its favorite temperature day and night, 24/7. That temperature is 70 degrees. see full Nissan review

9-speed shiftable automatic RWD		 I used to love this truck then I encountered the faulty timing chain tensioner issue where my engine started to have this whine when idle and a rough start. The timing chair was loose and rubbing up against the guides causing the whine, and it costs $1800 to get everything replaced. Timing chains shouldn't fail that's why they replaced timing belts, but this one fails because of a cheap part used to maintain tension in the line which will fail sometime after 90k. Issue #2 is the shoddy radiators that can leak coolant into the tranmission fluid destroying the transmission. Nissan's recommeded fix is the replace the radiator which will eventually fail again instead of the fix I have found on the internet which is to bypass the radiator all together and buy a transmission cooler. It's probably better to be safe and sorry and do this repair or run the risk of your radiator destroying your transmission and a costly repair to replace both at the same time! see full Nissan review
