I'm new to this website and I'm thrilled to have read so many great posts.
We currently have 1.8 TSI 2014 Jetta Comfortline (SE in the US) & 2015 1.8 TSI Golf Comfortline. I am giving away my Jetta to my parents as they need a new car. I'm shopping around for a new car for my family. I love my wife's Golf, but she's has some minor issues already with her car. Her radio turns off unexpectedly and there is a tick in her engine that VW cannot seem to fix. My Jetta has been great so far, but it's also fairly new.
On that note, I've driven most of its rivals 2017 Hyundai Elantra, 2016 Civic 1.5, 2016 Subaru Impreza, 2016 Mazda 3, 2016 Kia Forte5, and 2016 Corolla but in my opinion the 2016 Golf TSI wins. I'm afraid to purchase it though due to its poor reliatibility. Should I be that scared? Civic EX-L with 1.5 engine wasn't bad, but it's not a Golf.
What do you guys recommend?

If you really like how the Golf drives much more than the others, I'd get the Golf. It is a bit more of a gamble, though.
For some reason the GTI has been more reliable in our survey than the regular Golf. I keep expecting the scores for the two engines to converge, but they haven't yet. If you want to, feel free to use this as justification for the upgrade :)

I'm just curious- which Mazda3 model/trim did you test drive? If you didn't take a look at the Mazda3 Sport GT (aka- the Mazda3 s Grand Touring 5-door here in the U.S.), it would be worth another look.

I'm also considering a 2016 Golf TSI and have done much research. I've read there is a firmware update available from your VW dealer that is supposed to fix the radio issue.
It's a great car, but the ridiculous cost of transmission fluid changes every 40,000 miles done only by a VW tech is a tough pill to swallow. You don't own VW, VW owns you!
