Some more details would be nice!

Get a retired rental car, like a Kia Rio or Hyundai Accent. It's all that will be in your price range that is relatively reliable. Maybe a Nissan Versa Note or a Toyota Yaris, but otherwise you need to look for a car older than 3 years old. Versa Note is my first pick because it's a little more refined than the other picks. However, the seats are uncomfortable. There will always be a tradeoff with these subcompacts.

The 2013 Buick Encore will be the quietest, most efficient(39 mpg with AWD @ 60 mph), easy to get in and out of as well as park. And it has a 50,000 mile warranty but you'd be looking at the $13,000 range on up.

I think you should be willing to look at some older, reliable cars like a 2008 Honda Accord or 2007 Camry. They still have a lot of life in them. If you want great mileage, look for a 2008 Prius. I have a 2005 and 2016 and my 2005 has 250k miles. It still runs strong though. I also think you will get more enjoyment out of a nicer older car like an Accord than a 2014 Nissan Versa Note or a car with a salvage title.
