Any HAPPY Cadillac CTS Wagon owners out there? 2010 and 2011 model years look a bit iffy....

Want to move to a domestic, or very reliable import, to reduce maintenance/repair costs. Coming from BMW with sport package - level, stable handling at speed is important - Caddi CTS comes close. Any others? Wagon or hatch would be fun and more convenient than our sedan for bringing along pets, camping excursions, and carrying gardening supplies and other bigger items. We have a truck for the really heavy hauling. A 4 cylinder with turbo could be ok - or a fuel efficient 6. Mid to upper 20 mpg highway or better.Road noise bothers us - this was our primary complaint regarding the Honda crosstour we drove.

Primary Driver(s): New driver / Senior driver

Will consider both new and used cars
Maximum mileage: 30000

If you're used to a BMW, the reliability of the CTS shouldn't be a problem. "Average" isn't the same as awful. About half the cars require a repair in a given year, and many of the repairs are fairly minor. I suspect that the "red face" for the 2010 is due to owners getting small stuff fixed right before the warranty ends.

Thanks for the info Michael. I think what concerned me about the CTS was the consistency of some of the issues, particularly with suspension related components, that might suggest some quality control issues there. Certainly as a BMW owner I'm on a first name basis with the guys at the service department:) Despite that, the issues I've had have been random (there are always going to be a certain percentage of parts failures throughout the fleet), and 100% fixable. Expensive, yes. Poor quality, no.

I took a closer look, in case I missed something earlier. The most common problem I see for the wagon is tail lights that don't fit the body well. After that a wheel clicking noise, but that was only in the V, and resolved a while ago.

The related V6 in the large crossovers has had timing chain issues. I don't see these reported here for the CTS, though. It might be worth checking the Cadillac forum. Forums will make problems seem more common than they actually are, but can provide a good sense of which problems are most common (in the relative sense).

Given that a CTS wagon was impossible to find here, and the difficulty of arranging a reasonable trade long distance, I opted to trade my car in on a Honda Crosstour. Their trade-in offer was by far the most generous, and the Crosstour, while not the car I most wanted, has many things to recommend it. The reliability of the Accord (and this is an Accord with a hatchback, basically) has stuck in my mind since researching car reliability on this site. It's an attractive car, with a beautiful interior, and acceptable handling (for a not-BMW:). It also provides a little more utility than a sedan with the hatch and the folding rear seats. The 6-cylinder is a responsive engine that still gets nearly the gas mileage of the 4-cylinder. Braking is smooth and better, actually, than the Caddi's I drove. All in all, I think we will enjoy it.

Now to add it to my garage here. And think of a good personalized license plate for it!:)
