I'm looking for something similar in size and capability to the current Jeep Grand Cherokee. I like the Jeep and it checks a lot of boxes for me, but I am seriously turned off on the real world experiences people are having with this vehicle. I strongly prefer V8 or diesel engines. I did not like the V6 Grand Cherokee. The vehicle *must* have a full-time 4x4/all wheel drive option, but I prefer full-featured 4wd systems which includetraditional locking 4wd high and 4wd low range. A 2wd selection is not necessary.

Car Needs: Daily commuter / Errands about town / Long trips / Client-facing / Towing or hauling

Primary Driver(s): Senior driver / Tall driver

Unfortunately, you might not have any acceptable alternatives. The Toyota 4Runner, though very reliable, is V6-only and doesn't handle or ride nearly as well as the Jeep. The Nissan Pathfinder was available with a V8 through 2012, but I'm unsure of its reliability, since we have no data on its more recent years. Earlier model years were iffy. Other alternatives are European, and they tend to be riskier than the Jeep.

Basically, people seeking a recent midsize true SUV must choose between the Grand Cherokee and the 4Runner. The Toyota is reliable and performs well off-road. The Jeep is offered with more power and rides and handles much better on-road.

I've had 2015 4Runner since December 2014.
I tow a small 3200# camper all of the time; no issues with power, but the fuel economy is not great.
I've logged 46000 miles that have been trouble free except for replacing the radio under warranty. A V8 is nice, but reliability is better!
I considered the Grand Cherokee, but was really turned off by the reliability ratings and the number of electronic gizmos.
That said, the 4Runner is a body on frame SUV and rides like one, the GC was smoother...
I would make the same choice again.

The 2016 Buick Envision Premium would be your best bet with standard AWD. It has 2.0T with 250 horsepower that see 24-25 mpg combined on my 8 mile commute. On the highway we see 32 mpg round trip, all highway at 65 mph.

The Envision Premium AWD system is the best offered for around $30,000 with a twin clutch that allows a single wheel with grip while the others are slipping.
