Comparing the 2014 Nissan Frontier SVKing Cab 4x4 with Value Package to Toyota Tacoma. Toyota's reliability tends torank higher. I'd like to know the TD user community's thoughts. I once owned a 1985 Toyota SR5 Xtra Cab, and it was a great small truck. I've also owned a Nissan Maxima (different use vehicle, I know), and it was generally reliable. I'll be hauling only a couple times a year, but I also want towing capacity for a camper or boat down the road. I prefer the 6 foot bed on the Nissan, and it fits in my garage. I do not want an SUV, we already have one, so theRidgeline isn't as appealing. I'm not so sure the coming Canyon & Colorado will be appealing, but I wish there were more choices. What other factors should I be considering?

Preferred Bodystyle(s): Pickup

Car Needs: Errands about town / Towing or hauling / Off-roader

Primary Driver(s): Senior driver

Need minimum of 2 seats

Will consider new cars only

Maximum price: US $ 30000

The Toyota's additional reliability will matter most if you hold onto the truck for a very long time. If you're not going to be driving the truck much, it'll matter less.

Have you driven them both? What did you think?

I hope some people who chose between them will chime in. You might also check owner reviews on the site.

My dad retired last year and bought himself a long overdue new truck. We drove every mid- and full-size pickup available for $35k or less. His favorite was a 2013 Nissan Frontier SV Crew Cab 2WD with SV Value Truck Package.

Compared to the Tacoma, the Frontier had several distinct advantages. The ride quality was substantially better, the interior looked and felt more substantial and high quality and you could also feel the extra 25hp under hard acceleration. The Frontier was also a much better value (less expensive) than a comparable equipped Tacoma.

I am a huge fan of the Frontier and I highly recommend it!

Thanks, Jason and Michael. I too ended up with a Frontier. It was a great value, it came with the Value Truck Package, which provides plenty of reasons to buy. I ended up paying well below MSRP too. I didn't end up test driving a Tacoma, but my research told me the Frontier was the way to go. The extra HP, tow capacity, and my previous good experience with VQ engines helped. It was also the sole pickup with a larger cab and six foot bed which would fit in my garage. There were plenty of crew cabs available, but I found one of just two king cab 4x4 V6 Frontiers in Northern California.
