The Right Car for Me | TrueDelta

Member5776

We are looking for a family car. Family is 2 adults, 7 year old, and a dog. It's used mainly as a commuter car (~40km a day), and due to work needs to be able to get around in bad weather (AWD required). Used on weekends for errands, activities (skiing, go to bike trails, hikes), and some weekend trips (300 - 500km one way). Used once or twice in the summer to tow small pop up camper trailer.
We've looked at Rav 4 AWD LE (upgrade pkg) and Mazda CX5 GS so far.

Priorities: Reliability & durability / Fuel economy / Warranty, maintenance cost

Preferred Bodystyle(s): SUV

Car Needs: Daily commuter / Family transporter / Errands about town / Long trips / Towing or hauling

Primary Driver(s): Short driver

Need minimum of 4 seats

Will consider both new and used cars
Maximum mileage: 100000
Maximum age: 4 years

Maximum price: C $ 40000

I personally prefer the Mazda CX-5 to the Toyota RAV4 (though I haven't yet driven the slightly revised 2016).

The Subaru Forester is also worth a look. Less stylish and less sporty than the Mazda, but roomier.

Do yourself a favor and check out the Kia Sorento. You can get 7 passenger seating with a V6 or a turbo 4 with the 5 seater. It's roomier than the Toyota and the Mazda. It also still has a locking hub for 4 wheel drive and will go through anything without getting stuck. The 2016 has a very nice ride and lots of goodies for the price.

I really like how the new Sorento looks and drives. I am concerned about the high repair frequency owners have been reporting. It'll be a safer bet as a 2017, once they have the bugs sorted out.

We ve had ours for just over a year now and have had 2 recalls done and just routine maintenance. This is our third Sorento (have a 2013LX and had a 2012SX) and they all have been trouble free. The difference between the refinement of the 2016 to the 2013 is night and day. Kia definitey did their homework on this one and incorporated a lot of upgrades that customers wanted. 2nd model years are usually better as the bugs have been worked out, but being a completely redesigned vehicle and only 2 recalls early in it's life, we are more than happy with ours.
