It would be really helpful if you gave more criteria as the above narrowed it down to just about every SUV/CUV on the market. Do you have a long commute? What do you need to tow? Do you want it to be fast/good handling? Does your "place in the country" have paved roads? So far everything from a used Suburban to a Subaru Impreza fits your given needs.

As suggested by Dnslater, more details on your likes/dislikes and requirements would help us provide recommendations.

Based on what you have said, I think a compact crossover with good outward visibility, forward collision warning, and blind sport warning would be best. The hard part: finding a crossover with this safety tech for $15,000. The closest match might be a 2014 Buick Encore--unless it's too small. But one with these features will probably run nearly $20,000.

There aren't many AWD hatchbacks available. Subaru's safety tech package only became available on the Crosstrek for 2016, so one with it would be far above your maximum.

Thanks for all the responses. The roads out in the country are not paved. Commute is only 30 min.
But I am not considering another Acura MDX a 2006 a friend can't afford to keep anylonger. Its just like my old one except 3 years newer & has around 165000 miles where the other had 229000. miles when traded in. Also it has the upgraded pkg that offers navi. I'm seriously considering it since I miss my Acura so much.
I'm being offered the Acrua at 5k with a trade of my hubbys old 2002 Nissan Frontier that has 184000 miles & leaks oil from the rear main seal & overheats. IDK.....

PS. The Buick Encore is a great idea. Wonder if it comes with AWD.
