My initial reaction is that you perfectly described the Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited. You should be able to get that new in your price range.

The other two suggestions would be 1-2 years old.

I like the Mazda CX5 a lot. You would need to try the stereo yoursellf some are are appalled others think it is fine. Great gas mileage reported. You don't mention the size of the dogs. You would have to judge if there is enough space.

I'm not sure about the 2.0 liter engine on the sport, but most everyone is happy with the 2.5 liter on the touring and grand touring

How big is the family, and how big are the dogs? If your space needs aren't overly-substantial, look at the Ford Escape. It is exceptionally quiet, a very comfortable ride, and has plenty of power when you choose either EcoBoost engine. The 2014 model has all of the new-model bugs sorted out. We've taken a family vacation roadtrip with two adults and three children, with some minor off-road travel as well.

The in-cabin tech on more-optioned trims is great for families with pre-teens and teens, as there are USB ports and even 110V power available to keep their i-devices charged, among other handy features. This model has a number of redundant controls for climate and stereo, so there's no menu-hunting needed with a touch screen just to adjust the temperature or change the station. Voice-activated features are especially helpful if you're in one of the many and ever-growing list of states banning the use of mobile devices while moving.

If you need the space of a true full-size SUV for your dogs, this might not be for you. It fits our family of five, which includes two teenagers. (I'll refrain from suggesting any full-size models, as I don't have enough hands-on experience with them).

The Mazda CX-5 is likely too loud inside for you.

The Forester might or might not be quiet enough.
The Outback is probably a better fit than either. There's a new one coming in a few months that could be a big improvement over the current one.

Our member in Utah might be right about the Escape, it has been improving in our stats. The most common problems last year were panel fits and a tailgate latch, nothing major. It is quiet and does have comfortable front seats. Rear seats a little tight, and possibly not enough space in back for the dogs. If not, then back to the Outback.

Best mpg I"ve seen in a large crossover was in the Nissan Pathfinder. But it's having reliability issues, and seat comfort is just okay.

Main thing against the Mazda CX-9 is fuel economy. But it probably checks off the other boxes.
