Fuel efficient family hauler with 4 people & 2 dogs.

My initial reaction is that you perfectly described the Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited. You should be able to get that new in your price range.



The other two suggestions would be 1-2 years old.

I like the Mazda CX5 a lot. You would need to try the stereo yoursellf some are are appalled others think it is fine. Great gas mileage reported. You don't mention the size of the dogs. You would have to judge if there is enough space.

I'm not sure about the 2.0 liter engine on the sport, but most everyone is happy with the 2.5 liter on the touring and grand touring

The Mazda CX-5 is likely too loud inside for you.

The Forester might or might not be quiet enough.
The Outback is probably a better fit than either. There's a new one coming in a few months that could be a big improvement over the current one.

Our member in Utah might be right about the Escape, it has been improving in our stats. The most common problems last year were panel fits and a tailgate latch, nothing major. It is quiet and does have comfortable front seats. Rear seats a little tight, and possibly not enough space in back for the dogs. If not, then back to the Outback.

Best mpg I"ve seen in a large crossover was in the Nissan Pathfinder. But it's having reliability issues, and seat comfort is just okay.

Main thing against the Mazda CX-9 is fuel economy. But it probably checks off the other boxes.
