Fuel-efficient and safe family hauler

The Right Car for Me | TrueDelta

vasat8pb

Looking for a fuel efficient family hauler (need to haul two kids and a 100lbs dog). We need the third row because we have family that visits us from out of the country and stays with us for 2-3 months every year. So far I've narrowed it down to Acura MDX (2014-16) and Kia Sorento (2016). I like the safety tech in both these models but I'm not impressed by the fuel efficiency. I am on the lookout for Highlander hybrids but those are impossible to find (sub-50K miles).
I have always purchased used cars and hate springing for a new car. But I'm considering two new models that have similar safety tech and are more fuel efficient, Mazda CX-9 and Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. But I'm worried about their reliability.

Priorities: Reliability & durability / Fuel economy / Handling

Preferred Bodystyle(s): Minivan / SUV

Car Needs: Daily commuter / Family transporter / Errands about town / Long trips

Primary Driver(s): Tall driver

Need minimum of 7 seats

Will consider both new and used cars
Maximum mileage: 50000
Maximum age: 3 years

Maximum price: US $ 40000

I haven't driven the new CX-9 yet, but it's likely the best fit for what you're looking for. I'd be more wary of the new Pacifica in its first year. The new Sorento has had a glitchy first year in our survey. Nothing major IIRC, though.

Thanks for the reply. I really like the look of the CX-9 but hesitate because its the first model year. I look forward to your review of the CX-9. I'm test driving the MDX next week, it will come down to a used MDX vs new CX-9.
