We're looking to upgrade from our 2006 VW Rabbit, which has had a bevy of unusual, mostly electrical-related problems since it passed the 60,000 mile mark. We've got a baby now, so larger (taller) vehicles would be more convenient for hauling around all our stuff and getting the car seat in/out without destroying my back muscles. We're especially looking at smaller SUVs like the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, the Subaru Forester, etc. I have always dreaded car repair bills, so reliability and warranty are key priorities for me.

Preferred Bodystyle(s): Wagon / Convertible / SUV

Car Needs: Family transporter / Errands about town / Long trips

Need minimum of 5 seats

Will consider both new and used cars
Maximum mileage: 20000

The Hyundai Santa Fe is pretty good, but the new 2016 Kia Sorento handles and rides better, and I also personally prefer its styling. But if you want slightly new rather than used, it'll be too new. I'll be writing this one up in the next few weeks.

The new Forester has been very reliable so far, but past Subarus can get iffy once over 100k mles. So it depends on how long you'll have it.

We test drove Subaru's Forester, Outback, and Crosstek this morning and were really impressed with all of the safety features available in these vehicles. Right now we're leaning toward a 2016 Outback w/ Premium trim and the Eyesight stuff--blind spot detection, automatic braking, etc. We've got a while before the 2016 models arrive, though, so we'll check out some of the other manufacturers' offerings, but it seems like you can't get comparable safety features on other makes without bumping up to their highest tier of options...

Unfortunately, this does tend to be the case, and Subaru deserves kudos for bucking the trend.

Mazda comes in second for a similarly complete feature set on affordable cars, but does offer it only on the GT trim level.
