Fuel-efficient non-minivans that can comfortably fit a 69"x28"x34" crate as cabin cargo

The Right Car for Me | TrueDelta

dcuccia

Looking for a fuel-efficient non-minivan that can comfortably fit a 69"x28"x34" crate as cabin cargo. Reliable and fun to drive a bonus, leather seats preferred. Ford flex barely won't work...2nd row sears don't fold flat enough...interference with central dome lights.

Preferred Bodystyle(s): Hatch / Wagon / SUV

Car Needs: Daily commuter / Family transporter / Errands about town / Long trips / Towing or hauling

Primary Driver(s): Tall driver

Need minimum of 5 seats

Will consider both new and used cars
Maximum mileage: 50000
Maximum age: 5 years

Maximum price: US $ 35000

28 inches wide and 34 inches tall, or the other way around (which would be easier to fit)?

Subaru Forester might hold up to 32 inches tall.

Why the minivan exclusion?

The new Ford Transit Connect seems spot-on otherwise, though reliability is unknown on the new 2014. Older ones not as pretty or fun to drive.

The Honda Element's suitability will depend on what you find fun to drive, and mpg probably isn't great.

Thanks Michael! Subaru Forester is a great suggestion. I like that car a lot, esp with the 2.0 turbo. I' assumed it wouldn't work dimensionally, but it looks like the non-moonroof 2014/2015 actually might:

(though, can't tell how much of a vertical "bump" the folded back seats add)

Reason for no minivan was just to try to think creatively - I'm not a big fan of most minivans' styling, though the Quest was ok, and the upcoming Sedona looks pretty nice.
