A general rule-of-thumb with recent European cars is that they're usually fairly reliable for the first six years (i.e. the length of a CPO warranty), but after that point (we're there with the 2010s) be prepared to pay or turn a wrench. The flipside of this: people able and willing to do their own repairs can buy one for surprisingly little money, as prices reflect expected repair costs. Do your own work, and you're essentially paying yourself $120/hour, up front (in the depreciated price of the car).
What I'd do, if you haven't already: seek out a forum with a good number of 335d owners, and see what they think of the reliability of the cars and how viable it tends to be to DIY them.
