Fun, reliable car that can handle snow

I am looking for a car that's safe and can handle Montana winters, and has good acceleration. I will be using it for long work trips/ around town. I would prefer AWD but some people say a FWD with snow tires is almost just as good (I've only driven AWD). The Subaru impreza is my default option, but I am also considering a 2013 S60 T5 Volvo, but am concerned about the cost of maintenance and reliability. The question is do I go with a new base model Impreza or a nicer used car? As this is my first car, any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!
