How much do you need to tow? For over 5,000 lbs. nothing beats a large pickup or a large pickup-based SUV. A long wheelbase is preferable for stability.

Make sure the vehicle has an appropriate tow package installed, with coolers for the engine oil and transmission fluid.

I'm afraid my expertise is limited beyond this point.

Anyone else familiar with how different options compare for heavy towing?

If towing 8k to 11k lbs get a 6.4 diesel F250 , the engine is reliable though the Cooling system has needs work, good years are 2008 forward but don't get 6.0 power stroke diesel thst needs new Head studs, EGR replacement and is not reliable. The torque and fuel economy on a diesel is bether than gasoline and if you get a newer one you have ro run DEC fluid for exhaust cooling emissions as of 2011 I believe and if you run out of fluid engine will go on limp mode. Good luck!
