The closest match would be the Ford C-MAX Energi. The C-MAX is related to the current Escape, but is more of a tall hatchback than an SUV. You cannot get AWD.

I'm not aware of any plug-in vehicles with AWD.

There also aren't any affordable compact SUVs with hybrid powertrains. You can get the Lexus RX 400h, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Highlander, and VW Touareg as hybrids, but all four are larger and much more expensive than your Escape. None are all that fuel efficient when compared to a conventionally-powered compact crossover, either. The Audi Q5 Hybrid is smaller and more efficient, but no less expensive.

For $35k and used, only the Lexus and Toyota have been around long enough.

Highly efficient conventionally powered compact crossovers include the Mazda CX-5 and Nissan Rogue.

If you really like your Escape Hybrid, your best bet might be to get a 2012, the last year they were offered.

If you really want a plug-in, and can do without AWD, then the C-MAX.

They are new, so reiabilty is likely to be a big question mark, but there is the Subaru Crosstek hybrid. It's one if the higher MPG AWD options out there. Not as big as your Escape, but certainly better gas mileage. The looks are likely love it or hate it (I happen to like it). I have no idea what general reviews are for it either. Not exactly an SUV, but I couldn't thing of other hybrid options.

Thanks for your recommendation! However, not sure my mileage would be that much better. I routinely get 32 mpg in my AWD Escape Hybrid in everyday driving. An increase in 2 or 3 mpg would not be 'exciting'. My next hybrid has to be a plug-in model that goes 25 miles before even thinking about starting the gas engine. Thanks again.

My 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid just keeps on keeping on! No problems after 6.25 years. Replaced original tires this month with same type: Michelein Lattitude Tour. Round trips to FL from MD in April and May. 30+ MPG both trips. No reason to change horses now.
