Large SUV for large family

The Right Car for Me | TrueDelta

Member6357

I am looking for a large car that has plenty of space. I would like a third row seat. I would like something that can haul 6-7 people and 3 weeks worth of clothes/food etc. I would like something that can tow trailers as well (I will not be doing this frequently, but just in case). Also, I would like something that is easy to repair and maintain (I like to do all of the work on my cars that i can) and has a good track record of reliability (few major repairs required). I do not really care that much about features ( i am not looking for a luxury car)

Priorities: Reliability & durability / Powertrain performance / Materials & workmanship / Safety & braking / Cargo capacity

Preferred Bodystyle(s): SUV

Car Needs: Family transporter / Long trips / Towing or hauling

Primary Driver(s): Tall driver

Need minimum of 7 seats

Will consider both new and used cars
Maximum mileage: 140000
Maximum age: 14 years

How heavy is what you're towing? That will have bearing on what your optimal vehicle is. Even minivans can tow 1500 lbs, but if you're looking at towing a 7,000 lb boat, you'll need a Suburban-esque land barge to do the job.

mwcten nails the key question: how much do you need to tow? Just a couple thousand pounds? Then a Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna is probably your best bet. A Chrysler minivan might work as a budget buy. It's not as roomy or as reliable as the others (especially if we're talking pre-2011), but you can get one that's much newer for the same amount of money (which will improve reliability).

Need to tow much more than that? Then a Ford Expedition EL (extended length) has the most space for passengers and cargo, plus plenty of towing capability. The third row isn't as roomy or as comfortable in the Chevrolet Suburban. Other three-row SUVs won't have enough room for your luggage unless you put it on the roof.
