Quiet and comfortable car / CUV for my daily commute for midwest snow conditions

The Right Car for Me | TrueDelta

Member3981

Hi!
I currently drive 20 miles one way to my work and own a 2003 honds civic. The car is reliable but comfortable or quiet.
I am looking for something that is quiet, reliable and also can my family of 2 (2 toddlers) for short trips (200 miles).
I would prefer buying an American vehicle but I am not ound by that.

Few of the cars that I like but not sure about are:
1. GMC Terrain - since its high ground clearance, storage space and good gas mileage as well quieter than Chevy Equinox.
2. Cadillac CTS - Its looks, quiet drive
3. Buick Lacrosse - Its quiet drive and big trunk.

Thanks for your suggestions in advance.

Priorities: Quietness / Ride smoothness / Reliability & durability / Driving position & visibility / Warranty, maintenance cost

Preferred Bodystyle(s): Sedan / SUV

Car Needs: Daily commuter / Family transporter / Errands about town / Long trips

Primary Driver(s): Short driver

Will consider both new and used cars
Maximum mileage: 60000
Maximum age: 5 years

Maximum price: US $ 15000

The LaCrosse is my least-favorite Buick. They are very hard to see out of.

I am surprised to find that you can get a 2010 or even a 2011 CTS in your price range. I'd try not to go older than the 2010. Great looking cars. I'm not sure how well this car suits your practical needs, and they're not the quietest, though. A wagon was offered the first few years, but I see none in your price range.

I wasn't aware that the Terrain was much quieter than the Equinox. I'd decide between the two based on styling. They are quiet and smooth-riding. Reliability has been much better for those 2012 and newer than for older ones. The problem this is that it's hard to find one that is 2012 or newer within your budget.

The car I actually like best for your needs is the Ford C-MAX. It's a hybrid, so it'll do quite well on gas around town, especially if you adapt how you drive it (gradual braking wherever possible). Great visibility, good rear seat and cargo room, good ride, and quiet. I really enjoyed driving the one I had for a week (review in the "more about" link beneath the photo). AWD isn't offered, but there's a little more ground clearance than in a regular car and a lot of weight over the drive wheels, so it will perform significantly better than your Civic in the snow. After a rough start, they've been doing better recently in our reliability survey. Finally, you'll find quite a few 2013s around with prices around $15,000.

The #1 thing against the C-MAX is it is much less pretty than the CTS.

The related Escape is more attractive, higher off the ground, and available with AWD. But it's less efficient, not as easy to see out of, and I didn't enjoy driving it as much. This said, it might also be worth a look.

I compare the Escape and Terrain in my review of the GMC.

I think you might want to consider a used Nissan Murano. I purchased a used one five years ago and it is still performing very well at 91,000 miles. It is extremely comfortable and handles beautifully. The reliabililty on these is very good...mine is a 2009. I have never had it in the shop for anything other than routine maintenance. It is easily large enough to hold adults or children comfortably in the back seat; and we can fit two large dogs in the very back. My model is the base one (was initially a rental car), but it has many luxury features that are standard in the base version. The biggest downside to this car is the blind spot formed by the SUV end. The higher end models come with a backup camera...I wish I had that. Gas mileage is not great but is on a par with other vehicles in its size group. I have even gotten close to 30mpg on the road in good conditions.

Good luck with your search!

Not sure when this question was posted...maybe truedelta needs to include that with the post?
