Hybrids offer great value for money at the moment. A 2008 Toyota hybrid should be within your price. If you budget is slightly elastic you can find gen 3. ( Model year 2010 on) for ~$6500

There are plenty of other options, Incase you want something larger, sportier or cooler.Don't be afraid of brands that considered bad but actually have good models. Mitsubishi, GM, Ford all have good models

In this price range, you are talking a high miles car. The reliability at this point may come down more to how well the car was previously cared for than the make and model. Consider taking the car to an independant mechanic for an inspection before purchasing.

In this price range I tend to like the 2008-2011 Ford Focus. You can get a newer one than a Civic or Corolla for a given price. As Dnslater notes, how the vehicle has been maintained is very important, and get the car inspected bu a good mechanic before buying it.

A 2012 Chevy Cruze is in the $4,000-5,000 range. These will see almost 50 mph on the highway at the speed limit.
