Take a look at the Mazda3. The current model was introduced in 2014 and it is a very nice car in all respects. It performs well (even with the base engine and automatic), fuel economy is in the mid-high 30s on the highway and the front seats are very comfortable.

I agree that the Mazda is a good pick. Seat comfort is very subjective, though. You should sit in the driver seat of any serious contender for as long as possible. Some dealerships will let you take a car home overnight if they thing you're serious.

A Buick Verano isn't as efficient as the Mazda, but has more comfortable front seats than the typical small car, and seems reliable so far.

I like the Mazda 3, but I need something a little older and the older model doesn't appeal quite as much. I'll keep it in mind though. Right now I'm leaning toward a Corolla.
