After totaling my '11 Subaru Legacy last year, the paramedics told me it saved my bacon. They said folks involved in similar crashes, with cars from other manufacturers, did not fare nearly so well.

My current car is a '14 Outback. So far both of my Subaru's have had perfect reliability.

I'm sure Volvo is as good or better than Outback on safety. But the Outback scores much higher for reliability and cost of ownership from Consumer Reports. They generally rank Volvos as middle of the pack.

Additionally, the '15 Outback has numerous improvements over my '14 model year. An especially noteworthy item is that Outback passed the very tough "small offset" crash test.

And this will be a "I second that motion" for the Subaru Outback. The cost of ownership of a Volvo will be similar to German vehicle maintenance - expensive. And every Volvo door I have closed just does not have the same solid sound as other cars. A Volvo lover will argue since it is a very safe car. Subaru's are made in Indiana - go USA and keep the cash in the country, or at least the labor and a lot of parts manufacturing. Their plant is a Zero Emissions facility, meaning 0% of their waste goes to the landfill. A good thing for our country and ecology.

At least for the first 100,000 miles Subarus tend to be very reliable, though from time to time a new engine design will have issues early in the run. Volvo's reliability record is much worse.

The 2014+ Forester and 2015+ Legacy and Outback have excellent safety ratings. Volvo's might be as good, but they aren't significantly better.
