Oil consumption reviews on the web are concerning.
Has Suburu fixed or mitigated this issue? Frequency still above norms?
Extended warranty cover this adequately?

Only the 2013 Crosstrek was included in oil consumption law suit got the engine warranty coverage according to our lawsuit letter (2012 Forester) But 2014 and 2015 models have had their engines replaced if you searched the Crosstrek forums.

Either buy new or CPO so you know the engine is covered or factor in an engine replacement in the car price. Or a 2013 that has the engine replaced with plenty of warranty remaining because you don't know why the previous owner sold or traded it.

2016 and newer Crosstreks don't have the oil consumption issues. Basically, the older you go with these, the more oil problems you will encounter. When the car was called the "XV Crosstrek," oil consumption was more common, but not a huge issue. My advice is to get a 2016 or newer.

Subaru CPO isn't as good of a deal as some other brands like Mazda or Hyundai. With Hyundai, you get 10 years/100k mile powertrain and no bumper to bumper warranty. With Mazda, you get 7 years/100k mile warranty and a 1 year/12k mile bumper to bumper warranty, which is helpful if something happens with the infotainment system or interior parts. The Subaru CPO warranty is 7 year/100k mile with no bumper to bumper. Not bad, but the bumper to bumper warranty is helpful.

I think you would be fine getting a used non-CPO Crosstrek as well. The Subarus that had these engine problems were older.
