You mention that styling is a priority. Which cars do you like the look of?

A Mercedes GLK250 would have the fuel economy and the safety features. Less sure of long-term reliability and exterior styling.

A Volvo XC60 has the styling and safety features, but not the fuel economy. And again unsure of the reliability.

For style, safety features, and (more likely) reliability, but not fuel economy, the Infiniti QX50 (formerly EX) can probably be negotiated under your limit. It is very compact inside. My wife loves it (and the Volvo), but if roominess is a priority this one's out.

The only less expensive crossovers with adaptive cruise (unless I'm forgetting one) are the Mitsubishi Outlander and Subaru Forester. Neither one offers BLIS, though. No reviewer has much liked the Outlander (including me). The Subaru is a solid choice, and quick, but not exciting to look at or drive.
