I can't speak to which cars perform best in extreme cold, since it does not get quite that cold in Michigan.

Among sedans, few probably provide the seating position you are looking for. Maybe the Ford Taurus.

People looking for a good all-around car with a comfortably high seating position often end up with a Kia Soul. The 2014+ second-generation is much better than the original.

Among compact crossovers, my favorites are the Mazda CX-5 and Subaru Forester. Unlike the Soul these are offered with all-wheel-drive. But Manitoba is pretty flat, so a Sould with good winter tires should be fine.
