How large do you feel the vehicle should be?

Will a Subaru Outback do the trick? Or perhaps a Mazda CX-5 or even a Kia Soul?

Or do you want the interior space of a full-size minivan? Among these, the Toyota Sienna probably has the best reliability and the most comfortable seats, while the Honda Odyssey is a little roomier, and the Dodge Grand Caravan is the cheapest.

Minivans are not very recreational and only one offers AWD. Maybe look at Traverse, Acadia, or Enclave AWD's with seating up to 8 and 5,000 towing capacity.
