Ford Edge and the Mazda CX-5 should satisfy your SUV cravings. Do you regularly drive in seriously inclement weather? If so, the AWD option would help put your (and your wife's) mind at ease with decent tires. If comfortable driving in inclement weather, both of these models offer FWD which, with good tires, are more than enough for an experience driver. FWD also offers better fuel efficiency than AWD with all things being equal.

The VW Jetta offers a different approach; sedan rather than SUV which does afford better mileage. There are also TDI options to consider...The VW is more well known and accepted internationally and still holds resale value if the car includes regular maintenance records.

I encountered a similar choice a couple of years ago and decided to move my wife from a Honda CR-V into a used (2009) Mercedes E350 with 4Matic. I picked it up from a Mercedes dealer with about 35,000 miles on the clock for a cost signifacantly less than your $30k limit. She likes it and I feel good about the overall safety of the vehicle, particularly in the winter months. So far it has been trouble free. Only scheduled maintenance...which is somewhat expensive.

Agreed - it's pretty broad, so hard to recommend something that general. However I think you want a crossover, by the specified criteria.

Luckily, there are plenty of good crossovers to choose from.

CX-5: Lacking in comfort and interior quality but good handling & preformance. To be expected from a company that makes sporty coupes & hatches.

CR-V: Safe, comfortable, durable, but not particularly interesting in any way. Also, on the upper end of the price range.

Kia Sportage: You get quite a bit of car for the money. Solidly built, and a great warranty.
