Consider a hybrid toyota camry may have enough room to carry a bass.

How big is the bass in question? A little research suggests that that longest are still under 50 inches even in a case.

Must the car be able to carry the bass without folding any seats, or is it okay to fold at least half of the rear seat?

If folding a seat is okay, I'd think just about any car with a rear seat that folds could carry your bass.

Many sedans that don't have folding rear seats do have a passthrough sized for skis. Might the neck of your bass fit through one of these? If so, you have even more options.

It does sound like you want a car as compact and agile as possible. I'm going to toss out a few potential options.

The Elantra Touring was marketing as an "estate" (station wagon) in Europe. It has considerably more cargo room than the typical compact hatchback.

The Jetta SportWagen is a station wagon.

Moving a size class smaller, the Honda Fit offers a surprising amount of cargo room for such a small car.

For the summer, I'll go with my El Camino. Compact sport wagon looks like a good idea. Mazdaspeed 3?

The MS3 is a fun car. The first year, 2007, can be troublesome. And I'd be concerned about rust through the 2009 or 2010--Mazda supposedly fixed the design flaw that caused the cars to rust about that time. If the roads arent's salted when you live, then this isn't a problem.
