I have looked at Volkswagon Tiguan, Touareg, I hear they are costly to repair. I don't need a prestige vehicle, I need something that is economical, and that will last a very long time and go off road. I am now looking at Jeep Cherokee and Renegade.
Priorities: Off-road capability / Ride smoothness / Price or payments
Need minimum of 4 seats
Will consider both new and used cars
Maximum mileage: 60000
Maximum age: 7 years

A quick internet search on sites like this one or consumerreports.com should be enough to keep you far away from the Chrysler group for their poor reliability, low resale value and crappy customer service.
If you can get your hands on a used "soccer-mom" 4Runner or LandCruiser that has all the service records, this might be a better choice for you.

The Jeep Wrangler holds its value about the best of them all. The Renegade shares it platform with the Fiat 500X and would have to really know how many times off road you would go as the Renegade/500X are not even in the same class in off road in as the Wrangler.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee can get expensive for a newer model as they seem more upscale unless you can get a Cherokee on the cheap it is not much better than the Renegade/500X off road. Last of the very basic but good GC is up to 2004 or so. Very low repair costs before the model was redesigned.
I wouldn't take any of the soft roaders like CR-V, Rav4, or CX-5 off the painted line roads as you could get stuck with their 4wd systems.

I would go with a Subaru Forester as it would meet your specs. I assume, by off road, that you wont be climbing in and out of dry riverbeds, but are looking for something that wont get stuck in mud while on a dirt track, for example. Tough vehicles, pretty reliable (avoid the 2010-13 models, if I recall correctly, the motors had leaky seals). I wouldnt touch any Chrysler product, from past experience.

Subaru Forester definitely. If you put the right tires on a RAV4 or CR-V they can off road for sure, but don't do anything extreme. They are still meant for on-road driving with the occassional off road trip.

Older low mileage Cherokee. Not the Grand Cherokee. 1999 or older. They offroad for sure and my extended family has had them for pretty much ever. My brother drove one to 350k miles and then sold it to someone else and I have a 1989 with 300k plus that is still an everyday driver. I have a 1997 that I still drive from Indiana to Maine and the Upper Penninsula on a regular basis. None of these vehicles has had any major problems. Just add gas and go.

The 06-13 Suzuki Grand Vitara had 2 spd transfer case 4wd, and is probably the best other than a Jeep, or an Xterra if it isn't too big. I don't know if the newer CRV's have a 4wd lock button yet, but my 06 CRV needing some wheelspin to kick in the rear wheels makes it far more likely to get damaged if you need to follow a particular line through some rocks.
So if the GV or Xterra don't work for you, make sure the AWD system in whatever you get can be manually locked in before you spin.
