For mechanical reliability, I would stick with the Sienna. My mother bought a Sienna new, 8 years ago and it has required no more than maintainance fluids, tires, and brakes to keep running. There have been a few issues such as window shades not retracting properly, and the passenger seat not registering weight to trigger the airbags but those were fixed.

Ody or Sienna on that budget. Since you are using it as family hauler, the most important aspect to evaluate is the seating arrangement - how will you use it (today and in the future)? Do you have car seats, where will they go? Do you have older adults who will need to get in the 3rd row - how easy is it for them to climb in and around to the back? Do you plan to use the van to haul other stuff so need flexibility to move seats around, flatten the 3rd row and/or remove the 2nd row?

With the Odyssey just be aware that transmission problems are common through 2003. I'm not sure how old you'll have to go to get a minivan in good condition for $8000. The main advantage of rhe Chrysler is you could get a newer van, but it might not be as reliable. Check iihs.or for safety info.
