S5 vs. S4 vs. M3 vs. Evo X vs. STI vs. BRZ vs. Mustang GT... What is most reliable?

The Right Car for Me | TrueDelta

Member6296

Cars I have considered:

Audi S5 - 2009 and up
Audi S4 - 2009 and up
BMW M3 - 2007 and up
Mitsubishi Evo X - 2010 and up
Subaru STI - 2010 and up
Subaru BRZ -
Ford Mustang GT - 2013 and up

My concern is mostly reliability. I'm going to be buying used, and this is going to be my daily driver, plus I plan to do some modifications to it. I don't mind paying more for regular maintenance, however I dont want things constantly breaking down and creating issues. Plus I want power!! That's why the Subaru BRZ doesn't excite me enough.

What car should I get??!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Tom

The best bang for the buck will be the Mustang GT. While I really do prefer the German products, maintenance will be insane for the Audi's and BMW you listed. Especially if modified. The Mustang can be modified with either turbos or supercharger and will give you a seat of the pants ride. Check out www.thatracingchannel.com and search out the Mustang GT's. The only thing that outruns them are the heavily modified Nissan GTR's, but they are producing 1,200 hp.

My son attempted to modify a WRX - 3 times. It broke - 3 times. They cannot handle even 500 hp.

If you are really wanting German, do not discount a 2003 - 2006 Mercedes E55 AMG. Out of the box around 460hp (they are supercharged). You can switch out the pulley for $1,000 and have over 500hp of brute force that is as solid at 160mph as 60 mph. But limit that to a track, please. Tires and brakes are not cheap, however, and the vehicle has lots of computer components that are expensive. Just know what you are getting into with that rocket.

The cost of entry for the Mustang will be reasonable, same as maintenance.

Probably not the Germans. Maybe the Evo and STI. But as the first response suggested, you really cannot beat the Mustang for inexpensive, reliable performance.

Between the Mustang and the Evo/STI there's also the matter of deciding which sort of car you want to drive. These are very different types of cars.

The Hyundai 2013+ Genesis Coupe might also be worth a look. Not outstanding in any particular way, but both the turbo four and V6 are quick, 5/60 warranty, and prices should be attractive. I have no idea what sort of mods are available, though.
