Wagon, like the Freestar/TaurusX

The Right Car for Me | TrueDelta

Member378

Looking for a replacement for my Town and Country. Don't want a minivan, but would like second-row captain chairs if possible. Leather a must. Considering the Freeestyle/Taurus X anyway. Looking at big dog hauling in addition to teenage kids and cross-country trips. Absolutely going used, not new.

Preferred Bodystyle(s): Wagon

Car Needs: Daily commuter / Family transporter / Errands about town / Long trips

Primary Driver(s): Tall driver

Need minimum of 4 seats

Will consider both new and used cars
Maximum mileage: 50000
Maximum age: 7 years

Maximum price: US $ 20000

I'm a wagon fan myself, although more on the compact side than what it sounds like you are interested in. My first (and only) thought was the "not-quite-a-minivan" Mazda5. I don't know what else would have the type of seating you're interested in outside of a minivan or maybe larger SUVs. I'm not sure they offer full leather though.

The wagons I like (A4, 328xi, V50, Jetta) are all small. We have only 1 child (11) plus a big dog (Bernese Mt Dog) and my '07 A4 is tight. I wouldn't want a teenager behind me (6' 0") in the rear seat for a long haul. In a larger size wagon I think you'd end up with a traditional rear seat and your options there are the usual european suspects, Volvo, A6, BMW 5(my father in law loves his V70 with 150K+ miles that he bought used at >100K). There was another wagon post here where the Dodge Magnum was suggested as well.

Here's the link (I hope) to the prior entry I mentioned... "Half Empty Nest Car" bhttp://www.truedelta.com/next-car-Q70&b=my

I would also suggest you might want to look at a TSX wagon although probably still on the smaller side.

We've had a Taurus X for the past three years. I like some things about it, but not others. I need to fully write it up. The quick and dirty version...

Likes:
--interior space for people and cargo
--including a deep well behind the third row
--easy to fold seats (unless they jam)
--seat comfort
--great outward visibility
--relatively low price

Dislikes:
--lowest seating position still a little too high
--dangerous to view optional nav, it's so low
--very little feel to the steering
--body motions could be better controlled
--fuel economy lower than expected (close to EPA of 15/22, though)
--reliability so-so (drivetrain seals prone to leaking, second row seat jams, leading edge of hood corrodes)

Would I buy something else today? Probably not, unless we got a minivan. Other non-minivans rarely have enough space for a family's luggage behind the third row. The Honda Pilot might be another exception, but it handles even worse than the Taurus X.

Thanks for responses. I think I am gong to pass on the TaurusX. I have seen on Carmax that you can get second row captain's chairs on some Highlanders, so while the price would be quite a bit higher, the reliability may also be. Honestly I'm not too worried about handling at this stage of life, as to me a car is more of an appliance and I motorcycle for fun. If my dog passes on before I buy, I may go with a smaller wagon. But, the spoiled kids sure do like thier own chairs...

Saw a newer Acura wagon, and an old Lexus IS wagon yesterday. Other than Jetta wagon and Outback, this style leaves a lot of orphan models out there.
