Brand new Equinox AWD can be had for US$21,000 or so.

The most reliable compact SUV is the 2013+ Toyota RAV4. The 2012-2016 Honda CR-V is also very reliable aside from the idle vibration in the 2014-2016, which you should check if you take a test drive.

These are available with AWD. The CR-V is more comfortable. The RAV4 is more fun to drive. The Mazda CX-5 is efficient and fun to drive at the expense of some ride comfort and noise isolation. The Mazda is good if you don't want a boring SUV and want something with soul. The Honda has some road noise and a comfortable ride. For most people, the CR-V is perfect and the one to get. The Toyota offers a little better reliability and more standard features like a touchscreen, backup camera, and more. The Toyota feels more utilitarian and durable than the others. All of these are reliable, the Toyota most so.

The Equinox/Terrain will not compare to these with reliability. The Equinox has a comfortable ride and is one of the quieter ones. Also comes with a rental car reputation, maybe even a rental car CarFax (don't buy a rental car).
