At US $16,000 there some great deals for 2015 or 2016 Equinox/Terrain AWD. We really like the comfortable seats in our old 2015 Terrain with rear seat that slides 9" back and forth and fortg to haul more with the seat not folded. Here is the sister car, Chevy Equinox, that is a Certified Preowned and has an extended warranty. 2015 Chevrolet Equinox 1LT For Sale In Wilmington | Cars.com

The most reliable compact SUV is the 2013+ Toyota RAV4. The 2012-2016 Honda CR-V is also very reliable aside from the idle vibration in the 2014-2016, which you should check if you take a test drive.

These are available with AWD. The CR-V is more comfortable. The RAV4 is more fun to drive. The Mazda CX-5 is efficient and fun to drive at the expense of some ride comfort and noise isolation. The Mazda is good if you don't want a boring SUV and want something with soul. The Honda has some road noise and a comfortable ride. For most people, the CR-V is perfect and the one to get. The Toyota offers a little better reliability and more standard features like a touchscreen, backup camera, and more. The Toyota feels more utilitarian and durable than the others. All of these are reliable, the Toyota most so.

The Equinox/Terrain will not compare to these with reliability. The Equinox has a comfortable ride and is one of the quieter ones. Also comes with a rental car reputation, maybe even a rental car CarFax (don't buy a rental car).

As usual, Norm T & Electorfuel have given great suggestions along with lots of useful details.

The only thing I would ad is that you also consider the Toyota Highlander. Compared to the previous suggestions the Highlander will be more spacious in all areas and more comfortable. Those benefits come at a higher initial cost and reduced mpg.
