Suggest Subaru Outback Wagon. Runs great in snow and an all-around/all-season great vehicle. Mileage for me, with 48K miles, is 22 city/28 highway. Seats are very comfortable and the ride is secure and stable. Fair price/bought new as a 2011 model.

I don't think you'll find a 2010 or newer Outback for $5k. And older Subarus that are $5k don't tend to be reliable.

For people seeking a cheap, reliable AWD car I usually suggest the Suzuki SX4.

Don't rule out a reliable car with a good set of snows...my Civics have been excellent in snow the X-Ice's. Cheap, reliable.
