I own a 2007 Toyota Avalon and like its reliability, comfort, features and mpg.
A bit smaller than Avalon would be O,K.

I too am retired. Purchased 2011 Subaru Outback wagon (new). Now has 49K trouble-free miles. Very comfortable and safe, along with decent mileage (23 city/29 highway on regular gas). Take approx. 8-to-10 600 mile round trips per year to visit family and friends. Seats are very comfortable and ride is very secure. Would highly recommend.

It's not really possible to get a highly reliable diesel wagon, since all of them are German.

I agree with the above that your best bet is probably the Subaru Outback.

You might also like the Acura TSX, as long as it is large enough inside for your needs.

Finally, the closeat Toyota has offered to a Camry wagon is the Venza.

I really like the 2016 Buick Envision Premium 2.0T used for around $30,000. It elevated but not too tall providing good visibilty. It has all the luxury features available in the Premium ll but for $10,000 less than a Lexus NX. And Car & Driver had the noise measured at a lower decibel rating in the Envision than the Lexus RX.
